no. However, my sister's friend has one. from what I understand, it has better IQ than my T1i, but it's fewer MP (so I can't crop as much) and it's slower, has a dinkier screen, doesn't do video and blah blah blah.

if you want a CAMERA that does STILLS and nothing else, go for it. I kindof like having video, and really like having the nice screen for reviewing pics on.

Neither the XS or the XSi does video. So you personally haven't shot with the XS but you post in every thread where the OP is obviously on a tight budget pushing the XSi? I've owned and shot both and honestly I don't see a lot of difference. That $100 or so difference is a big deal to some people. That $100 will buy a 16GB SD card and a bag with change left over.

well then he will get the XS. it's up to him. I am telling him why I THINK he should get the XSi instead.

in the end, it's up to him, no matter what we tell him.

the title is "XS vs XSi" not "Convince me to get an XS and save a few bucks"

I bought brand new locally (yes, Erik, retail price....I'm just such a chump, eh, shame on me). That's where the $200 came from. It seems to vary every time this sort of thread is posted.

you guys need to go to sleep (or maybe i'm taking thins too personally).

I like to find deals. Why spend more than I have to? I would rather drive all over or create extra accounts than spend an extra $100 if I don't have to.

I digress.

I looked at both of these for my 1st DSLR, what it came down to for me was the larger 3" screen and the faster fps, the glowing review about image quality being comparable to the 40D didn't hurt either. The price difference between the two was way less than $100 when I was shopping. I say go for the XSi.

I vote the xsi, I have used both on many occasions and dislike the slow fps in raw (1.5) of the xs. Also the xs doesnt have the spot metering which is very useful in most occasions in my opinion. After using my xsi for a few months and them using an xs for a few days I could already point out all the drawbacks.

go for the sxi. I i have tried both and xsi is nicer. The grip feels better on the xsi. xs does not have a rubber grip for your thumb by the buttons. xsi also has a extra metering mode that the xs does not.
Also xsi has 9 focus points compared to 7 on xs. xsi lcd is 3 inch xs is 2.5. XSI is worth the few extra bucks for it.

only $90 difference, but you get so much more.

I got a used XS a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier. Maybe eventually I'll care about the lack of spot metering, but these cameras are VERY similar.

well, the T1i and the 50D both have almost identical sensors, and both have 9 AF points.... but I would still not say they are "very similar"

The XS is more than enough camera for a beginner, I'd go for that and save yourself some money.

This being my first DSLR how much of a difference will I notice / need? I don't want to spend empty money. If the XS with the kit lens is great for a beginner then I'll probably pick up that with hopes of buying a new lens in the future. If the XSi is that much more noticeable for a beginner with its' kit lens, I'll purchase that one. I'm asking you guys, as experienced photographers, which one will be a bets fit for a newcomer?

I'm new to the world of dSLR's looking to get into it as a hobby. .. .

After reading this statement (and the rest of the tread) I'd say buy the cheapest XS you can find .. new or used.

I base this advice on one fact. The moment you get hooked on this hobby you will want to upgrade, trust me ;)

Just buy better glass from the beginning. Bodies come and go .. good glass will stay with you for along time :)

Other than the sensor, the difference between the 500D(T1i) and the 50D is a lot greater than the difference between the 450D (XSi) and the 1000D (XS)

It isn't noticeable and both come with the same (18-55 IS) kit lens anyway.

If you will do a lot of editing yourself, I assume you will be using RAW. If this is the case, get XSi. IQ wise, XS and XSi are more similar than differences. The main issue with XS is its spec'ed 1.5fps RAW capture. In real life, it is more like 1fps, no matter how fast your click with your finger or even hold down the shutter, the next shot will come 1 seconds later. It may not sound much now, but it is long when you need to take the next shot new.
