Hi everyone,

some opinions on which one lens to get, the canon 28-135 USM IS or the Sigma 24-70 F2.8. would you think IS is better that F2.8?

Thanks,
Randal

What are you shooting most of the time?

No contest. The 24-70, unless you are shooting at 71-135 the majority of the time.

family events, weddings and the likes. sometimes sports (outdoor) and street events (i.e. parades).

I was almost going to get the sigma but got second thoughts when the vendor showed me the canon.

I was hoping to get a more general purpose lens. First idea was to sell my 200mm F2.8 then get a 70-200mm F4 and the sigma 24-70.

Thanks,
Randal

Yeah, that's better. The Sigma is 2.8 which gives you much more versatility, and then the 70-200 is a solid lens. That's a better group than the 28-135.

I just sold my Canon 28-135 IS and bought the Sigma 24-70 F/2.8 and a Canon 70-200mm F/4 L.

Although it now means I have to change lens more often I feel the combo offers more options and is optically better than the 28 - 135.

This lens is a bit too narrow angle to shoot weddings & family events. You're forgetting about the 1.6 factor. I have the lens and for thhose types of evens I usually end up either shooting across the room or using the kit lense.

i have both and love em both, i do find myself using the canon more than the sigma now... the whole IS thing, the sigma was killing me with how many good, lost shots i had to dump because of camera shake. If the lightings right and the cameras settings are correct for the situation, they are both great!

Sigma 24-70 is stellar. I love mine. Coupled with the 70-200 you are set.

24 is still fairly wide even with the crop factor. But if you need wider there are a few options.

I'd take the advantage of Sigma 24-70mm. Every f-stop counts. You may understand why lenses cost double when the aperture increases by one stop. Don't forget that Canon 28-135mm stops down to f5.6 at 135mm. Sometimes even IS can't help because IS can't freeze quick motion.

If you want a wider lens, Sigma offers an 18-50 f/2.8. So Sigma has your bases covered. :)

I've had both ... fstopjojo's test pretty well summarises my own conclusions in optical quality terms. For some, IS may be necessary to get more keepers. Depends how much you shake. I wouldn't go back personally.

For weddings you will need the 2.8 if you shoot without a flash. IS does not help you when the object moves.

On a crop body, the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 is awesome. I intend on moving to a full frame camera next (in a few years time ;)) so that's why I'd choose the Sigma 24-70/2.8!
