If they don't say then you're fine.

I've been told to stow a dSLR like twice in 20+ years of commercial flying.

yea, i've never heard them say "cameras must be turned off" its always "laptops, cd players, ipods, phones, etc" thats why I've done it, but if they did say cameras, i wouldn't like you said.

Lately I've heard the announcement a bit modified to: "Anything with an On/Off switch must be turned off."

I'm generally in an Exit Row and can't see anything anyways so I don't worry about it that much. ;)

I'd argue that they don't radiate to any measurable amount but like I said, if they say "OFF" then it's "OFF."

Federal Law says they're right .. Always.

if the little bit of signal can interfere with a plane then we're all doomed, lots of and i mean lots of people leave their cellphones on during flight noone has ever been harmed theres never been any interference, heres the real reason they want electronic equipment off, they dont wnat you to have the opportunity to entertain yourself for free, if you used your cell , they couldnt charge you $1 per min and the ywhant you to buy their entertainment, this idea that cameras laptop and phones are dangerous is foolish, ask an engineer if you dont believe me, does anyone have a shot form the airbus 380 apparently it has a video cameras facing forward and backwards that allows you as passenger to look out the front and rear of the plane

I'm well aware of all of this but it's trumped by FAA Regulations regarding following Crewmember Instructions as well as lighted signs and placards.

Failure to do so is a Federal Offense on US-flagged airlines.

I also am a Private Pilot and, FWIW, I have heard what a cell phone can do to the radio in a plane (understanding of course that a Cessna or Piper does not have the same kind of shielding that a commercial aircraft has.)

If any argument against cell phones in flight is valid (other than the one where I don't want to hear the person next to me chin wagging all the way across the country), it's the one regarding cell site hopping from altitude.

I'm sure it also has to be a safety thing, they don't want you to be preoccupied in the event of an emergency landing; thus everything is stowed away, clear paths etc.

is he on this board? does he use canon or nikon? seriously though, its too bad we have to deal with these camera ****s, those of us who take pictures on aircraft truly enjoy the experience, and these people who want to interfere really make our hobby unhappy

Cell phones do cause interference on airplanes. As an earlier poster said they cause radio interference that is pretty annoying to listen to. If you would like to hear what it sounds like take your cell phone, make sure it is on and set it on top of a radio (clock radios work real good for this). You should start hearing a random ticking, clicking and interference sound. It isn't continuous but intermittent. The aircraft radios pick up this signal as well and the pilots can hear it. I can tell when someone has turned on or left on their cell phone in the plane from the noise created in the headset or speaker.

Now most non-video cameras should not cause interference. However I believe some cameras can download images from camera to computer without being connected so they must be sending out a signal during that process. Will it interfere with something? Probably not but who really knows? The thing is there are so many electronic devices that people use nowdays that the regulations could never keep up an approved list. Someone would have to research every item to figure out what would be approved or not. It would have to be tested on every piece of avionics that are used on airplanes to ensure there is no interference. The easiest thing is to keep it simple and just make sure everything is off from takeoff through 10,000' and then again for landing.

Several airplanes (mainly private) have cameras installed. I fly one that has 4 external cameras on it. The reason why those are allowed is they have been installed and undergone extensive testing to be approved for use on the airplane. None of the consumer cameras have been tested. Again, it doesn't mean that a consumer camera will cause interference but it also doesn't mean it won't. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

Besides, I'm not sure how much these rules can really be limiting people from getting good shots. Every airline flight I have been on has dirty, greasy, scratched plastic windows that would seriously affect the quality of picture that can be taken from it.

I think the majority of pictures in this posting were taken through airline windows, and quite a few of them look very good.

The Mt. St. Helens shot is really cool, I love the clouds around it!
