7D

Main reason: Less expensive than the MK II.
Also, not full frame. Meaning, in a sense, expendable. (Hate having to use that word).

7D. 7D 7D 7D!!!

7D pairing with 10-22, 17-55 IS and 70-200 f/4 IS is a perfect system for traveling light.

I got every shot I wanted in the UK with the 40D and the 12-24 Tokina, and I reckon doing so with the 7D would be easily accomplished.

I have a 5DII but did my travelling through Nepal with 40D 17-40, 24-70 and 70-200. Awesome. So I would have to say 7D, all day.

I'd say its a wash. I'd personally take the 5D Mk II just to have the absolute best quality photos I could have (travel photography is one of my favorite things and having the best IQ is definitely something I'd consider for cropping, ISO, general FF goodness, etc), but the 7D is by no means a slouch. I guess what it boils down to is what lens lineup you already have or are considering. If you insure your camera gear (which you should anyways) value abroad shouldn't be an issue. I took my 40D to Hawaii and Barbados and got excellent results though - either will do fine.

I'd opt for 5D2 + 24-105 F4IS. One camera, one lens, for traveling, that's all you need. No need to carry other lenses with you (esp if you'll be doing a lot of walking, seriously not having to carry spare lenses count for A LOT!). Heck, even when I was still using the 40D I brought, Sigma 10-20, 24-105is, 55-250is, and the only one I used was still the 24-105 (and that's on a crop camera, you don't even really get a wide angle out of that) :)

Either with a 17-55 or 24-105 and a 50 1.4

I'd also carry a S90 or small pocket camera of you choice.

I'd opt for the 5D, but it really depends on your what lenses you have.

i think the 7d is slightly heavier than 5d2.. but dimension wise, the 7d is smaller.

Guys, for your information, the set up that I am thinking of bringing with me when I visit Japan after Christmas would either be a 5D MKII with a 24-70 F2.8L lens attached or a 7D with a 17-55 F2.8 IS lens attached.
Thanks.

Either one will do.

I recently travelled with my 5DII. Why, because I have one.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.
