You know how when you use live view it opens up the shutter? well doesnt that count as a click because i open and close that with 1/3 of my pics, so i really think this could deminish the shutter life. ESPECIALLY when you use live view, and use real focusing where it flips up the mirror, and then opens the shutter again for more live view.

Post your thoughts.

Yes, the shutter opens so I would count that as a shutter actuation.

So what i'm getting at, is that you basically cannot trust a purchase on a camera with the live view function based on shutter count, because they could of used live view for every shot and double that shutter count.

You can not trust any camera based on shutter count except for the few that the astrojargon tool works on.

I would say that this is an unlikely enough scenario that you need not worry about this. If you want to be on the safe side, double the shutter count of any camera and decide if that number falls within an acceptable threshold for you.

How secure is the shutter count anyways? Does Canon zero it after they replace a shutter? If so, then anyone could potentially zero it. If not then the number is wrong.

The astorjargon tool only works for the 40D, 50D, 450D, 500D, and the 1000D and maybe the 5DII. Don't know about the 7D but it might work there as well. All the other cameras do not have the ability to get the shutter count without a trip to Canon.

I would guess that Canon does not reset the shutter count. There are other mechanical components besides the shutter that would benefit from knowing how many actuations there are. maybe someone who has a 40,50,450,500 or 1000 and has had a shutter replaced can weigh in.

You sure it works for the 500D? I heard it doesn't though I've not tried it myself.

I just read on their site that an update to the 500D disabled the shutter count.

EOS info does not work on the T1i(500D) and the 7D. It appears Canon has changed something that makes it incompatible with the latest cameras.

From the EOSinfo website: http://astrojargon.net/EOSInfo.aspx (external link)

UPDATE (08/06/2009): Apparently, Canon has removed the facility for checking the shutter count on the 500D. More news when I learn something.

For some reason the download will not work, it gets to about 12% and then freezes... are there any mirrors for this download?

I don't know why Canon is so hell bent on keeping something as innocent as shutter count a secret. They seem to go out of their way to keep the data hidden.

Because people check the numbers, complain if their refurb has a high shutter count, etc.
