ESPECIALLY when you use live view, and use real focusing where it flips up the mirror, and then opens the shutter again for more live view. I would say that this is an unlikely enough scenario that you need not worry about this. If you want to be on the safe side, double the shutter count of any camera and decide if that number falls within an acceptable threshold for you.

It appears Canon has changed something that makes it incompatible with the latest cameras. UPDATE (08/06/2009): Apparently, Canon has removed the facility for checking the shutter count on the 500D. More news when I learn something.
