It depends on how wide you want to go. I would recommend the tokina 11-16 if you have a 40D. If I still had a crop sensor I would have kept mine.

I love my EF-S 10-22. And the price on the used ones have been dropping.

I also really liked my 10-22 when I had a 40D.

I'll put another vote in for the 10-22. It's my most used lens on my 40d.

10-22mm or 17-40mm !
I think the 10-22mm is sharper
why do you even ask... it's obvious & there isn't much choice

I haven;t used the 10-22 but I have also heard good things about it.
I did have a Tokina 12-24 f/4 and used it on a 40D with good results. While on vacation, it stayed on the 40D most of the time.

How about the new Sigma 10-20 f3.5 (versus their f4-5.6)? Has anyone used it? I too have a 40d and am pondering the same -- I've narrowed to the two Sigmas and the EF-S 10-22 -- hopefully this is appropriate for the OP's question.
