My Zeiss 50mm and my Focal MC 80-200 paid for themselves last night. I shot a fashion show/Ball event totally in manual focus last night and the pics are win. Working on them tonight will post later.

Can't wait. :)

Test shot was taken with a Contax Zeiss 35/2.8 wide open on a 5D2. The first image was PP'd slightly with levels and contrast only. The second pic is a 100% crop of the raw file, no PP other than convert and re-size. If you haven't shot with a Zeiss, you ought to. :D

Hey guys, I am totally intrigued by the amazing pictures y'all post here. I have a few questions here.
I own a 5D and would like to get hold of some wide prime lens(something in the range 19mm-24mm) for exclusive ultra wide angle landscape work. Do you have any recommendations? I am looking for something within the $400 price tag. Thanks for the help and keep posting the cool stuff here.

21mm and below will cost you some cash...the Olympus 18/3.5, for example, will set you back between $800 and $900 (that's if you can find one), and the Oly 21/3.5 will run about $500 plus or minus. Your best bet for an easily adaptable wide lens that won't have any interferences on your 5D, and with excellent IQ, is the Olympus OM 24/2.8 . Excellent lens, small and compact, and only about $150 give or take. Add in a cheap $20 adapter and you're golden. Here's what it looks like:

for less $ you could go with the sigma 21 or 24 AF lenses.

I just sent a PM offering a mint copy of the Olympus Zuiko 24mm MC with case and EOS adapter for $250 shipped. I picked this up in a trade for Zeiss offerings and have the Zeiss 21 Distagon ZE so I am covered.

Here's a great link on the 24.

UP Otaku Fest 2009 (Dec. 12)

Taken inside the University of the Philippines Cebu Campus. Exposure is very tricky in overly bright scenes resulting in low contrast photos.

I didn't post-process these photos so I can see what the camera recorded from the lenses. It will take me some time to learn to perfectly focus most of the time and to compensate for bright scenes.

The 6 below are the only ones out of 179 that I think are ok. And even then, they don't come close to the Nifty Fifty's sharpness when using AF. Again, these aren't the len's fault but rather the results of my less than a month experience with them.

A 3.352% success rate :( I'll be happy if I could increase this to at least 25%. I better practice with stray dogs, me thinks :)

Dude...get a split focusing screen and call it a day. Beating up on yourself doesn't solve the problem..go get the screen and realize that you did the best you could trying to eyeball it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am doing my research on the Oly 21mm 3.5 now :) I hope I can find some samples and reviews someplace. The olympus 24mm 2.8 looks good, especially for that price, but my sweet spot in landscape photography is about 17-21mm :)
