i know the the fakes are not made of magnizium like the original, and the shutter botten are like the 40d and not like the 5d

what would you buy ?

I have the grip, and honestly to tell you the truth, I havent used it. Personally It annoys me sometimes. Others find it useful. But the less money you can spend the better. Unless you are getting paid for your work,keep it simple and less costly.

Why buy a grip. Spare batteries are much cheaper and I can shoot over 400 shots on one battery anyway.... Spend your money on glass!

I have the Real Canon Grip. I wouldn't buy the aftermarket grips due to know connection and breakage problems. My D700 has the Real Nikon Grip also.
I have never had a problem with either.
I really like the extended battery life from using 2 batteries. I also use it for portrait work and it makes life easier for me.

I have the expensive Canon grip... never take it off.

Works wonders when you want a vertical shot... that's why it's called a GRIP!

And two batteries... I like that feature too.

On longer lens like 70-200 it also helps balancing the weight for handheld shooting.

It's expensive, but alot cheaper than any L lens.

those parts are absolutely true,I second that.

I have the Canon grips, even though I only use a grip maybe 20% of the time. When I do use them, I need them to be tough and reliable, so for me it's worth the extra money.

Dont waste your money on a genuine one like I did...

That`s not the same as the BG-E6 It`s an older BG-2N for another body.
I`m sure it wasn't related to product quality. I would venture to say it could have been user related. Stuff Happens everyday, but that doesn't mean the product was inferior, but the aftermarket stuff can be IMO.

I plan to buy a grip for my recently purchased 5Dm2
I intend to use it a LOT for portrait mode. Having my hand and wrist in an awkward position does not appeal to me in the least if I can avoid it.

I do wish it was about $50 cheaper

A grip does add weight and bulk but it also helps and makes easier shooting in portrait mode and giving balance for a longer zoom lens.

I don't have a 5DMKII w/grip (:cry but I do have a grip on both my 5D's (as well as my 10D & 7D) and one is a Canon and the other is a Meike and I see no difference between the two. Both are well built, work perfectly but the price difference was considerable.

I can't comment on the construction between the Canon & Meike grips but they both weigh about the same when off the cameras, both feel as solid as the other. Maybe if they fell to the ground there might be a difference but I hope I never find out I think the money saved was a nice plus for the off brand grip.
The grip on the 7D (Canon brand) works fine and is also as well built except the batteries do not fit in as tight as the two 5D grips. Other than that, no complaints!

All I can say is it's a personal choice ... if you don't feel comfortable using an off brand, save up for the Canon. I have no problem with an off brand!

I bought a Zeikos (clone) of BG-E6 and in the middle of shooting a wedding, it locked up the wheels (both dials) on the body. I had to turn off the grip to get it back to function. Not sure why, maybe I got a bum Zeikos grip. Anyhow, that had me worried and the next day I bought the Canon. No more 3rd party grips for me.

I have the fake grip or my 5D2. It does the trick. It is probably not as nice as the real deal Canon one, but I am more interested in balancing my camera vs. a 24-70L/70-200L than build quality and authenticity. Plus, I am content skimping on something I will not use 100% of the time. The combo does not feel as "cohesive" as say a 1 series body, but it is more than satisfactory. I bought mine on ebay for ~80 bucks and I feel like it's worth about that. I have not experienced any connection problems in my somewhat limited use and hope I don't in the future. It IS very helpful for shooting portraits and vertical shots - does wonders for waterfall shots.

You have to decide if you are ok using an off-brand product. Everything has some risk of failure. Canon brand batteries and grips (and cameras and lenses...) have some percentage of failure. You have to figure out if Brand X, is going to have a higher rate of failure since it is reverse engineered and all that. You can't really go wrong here, it's just what you're willing to tolerate and what risk you're willing to take.

I have the Canon BG-E6 on my 5DII. It's a well made, good product. I'm happy with it and felt it was a good value. I use grips 95% of the time on all my cameras and have since the 1980s (winders and motor drives back then, and then Power Boosters on Canon film cameras in the early years of the 21st century). I only remove the grip if hiking or cycling with the camera and wanting to temporarily reduce size/weight to a minimum.

Back when I got the 5DII, the new LP-E6 batteries for it were scarce. There were third party batteries around (which I use with older models without a second thought)... BUT, they weren't the new Canon lithium technology, couldn't be charged in the Canon charger. So, check what batteries used by any third party grip you are considering are fully compatible... You might not be able to use any LP-E6 you have in the 3rd party grip, and might not be able to use your Canon charger with their batteries. All this might have changed, if the 3rd party manufacturers have caught up with Canon's battery tech changes.

Third party grips for 20D to 50D and 5D Classic were more easily cloned, since all those cameras used the venerable old BP511/511A batteries.

Oh, and the 7D uses the same LP-E6 batt. packs, and I suspect when it's introduced a 60D will too.

I think the grip for the 5D is very cheap. The one on the 1D's costs 2000$
