i have a XSi im giving my sister my XSi at christmas. i cant make up my mind what its replacement will be. i keep jumping back and forth every day i think about this. I m buyin a new camera in about a week and a half and cant figure out what to get. Here is what i have shot the most so far, but not to say it will be the same next year, but there is a good chance most of my photos will be more in the same.

i shot mainly drag racing last year with my 18-55, borrowed a 70-300 a few times, and rented a 70-200 once for it. This is my main focus in photography at this point. But its not just the motion i like to capture. its the people in the pits, the cars being worked on, and everything around and to do with racing.

Nowi did try my hand a few times shooting some animals (pets), some city scape stuff, and some nature/landscape stuff. All of which i do liek as well, and want to expand more on.

so with that i have my dilemma on what to get, and the choices are...

1) 50D + kit 28-135 lens and either a 10-22mm wide angle, a 100mm macro lens, or shoe mount flash.

2) 7D + kit 28-135

i do not own a flash either so the high iso noise is kinda a big deal to me. it is the main reason i want to get out of the XSi. night shooting, motion photography, without a flash makes for a difficult situation. I still want to stay away from using the flash at night, i just have a thing for the natural lights, background lights, and natural highlights all around.

i wont have the money to buy another lens for a while after this purchase so i want to make the most of it. Now first thought would be just to go with the 50D and 2 lenses then. But i managed to get by with a 18-55 all year and get some decent shots. so having a lone 28-135 would help me expand in almost all sorts of situations (except the short range). For a better idea of what ive been doing, check out my smugmug page.

So thats where the debate in my head begins. So now with time crunching down, i turn to the net to see what others think could suit me. i know only i can truly answer that...but opinions may help me see more clearly.

so please help guide me if you can. What would you pick and why?

and if you pick option 1, what "extra" piece would you pick up with it?

Based on what you shoot I would go for the 7D a little extra speed on the AF a better AF and a bonus of some video throw in.

Well ordinarily I would say get some glass. You made some nice pictures on your Smugmug site. The nature shots are gr8. Gifting your Xsi means that you're losing a lot of the wide end on a 1.6x body if your replacement is a 28-135.

However the 7D is such a nice camera and with features like a faster shooting speed, higher ISO and if you need it, HD video for drag racing. It's more the first two features that would be beneficial at the track. If your sister is near you, you can always borrow the 18-55 from her.

My 2c

Yes a poll would have been fun ;)

Good luck with your decision-making and enjoy your photography

I agree, only might be tempted with the 135mm L instead of the 200mm. On a crop, the 135mm is like a 200mm F/2. Sweet!

Great suggestion, good bang for your buck...if money is a non issue, then get a 7d + lenses above, but glass first.

good luck!

I would say Glass is always first. But I would be hypocrite... I purchased the 5D MARK II instead... But ya, if you went my way, 7D...

I would buy a lesser body and get the 70-200mm f/2.8 or a zoom lens with f/2.8 - I like the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 but if you can afford the Canon all the more power to you. If you don't have flash, f/2.8 becomes even more important to have - there's no way I could do half of what I shoot now without the constant f/2.8.

erm.... sorry but did you say your main problem is noise.

do not own a flash either so the high iso noise is kinda a big deal to me. it is the main reason i want to get out of the XSi.

well if you get a 50D you are not going to notice any real difference in the noise issue. In a 7D you will get a slight improvment but not HUGE. If you really want to reduce noise then your best options are faster glass, better post processing (for noise reduction) and getting exposure spot on before processing.

For all other reasons you stated you would be fine with either camera. I would get the 50D and better glass though.

he said he's going to give his xsi to his sis, so buying lens would be useless at this point.

No I'm not a photographer, I just shoot with Canon DSLR with those lenses with red thingy...;)
