My last day to decide. Wife wants an "iphone" but I'm concerned about AT&T coverage so I'm thinking about the Droid w/ another carrier.

Which one and why?

I think a lot depends on where you live. Which carrier has the best coverage in your particular locale? I think that ATT's coverage woes are a direct result of the iPhones popularity and generally seems to be more pronounced in major metropolitan areas with a high preponderance of iPhones. How is she going to use the phone? If she's just going to use it for calls, and general web and email usage then I'd buy based on carrier coverage in your particular area. If she wants to use a lot of different apps, or wants to listen to music and already is invested in iTunes than the iPhone is probably a better choice.

We're in Dallas so accessibility is a concern. The rest of the fam has AT&T so she wants on with all them too, but I know she wont be happy w/ the service...

Since the rest of the family has ATT I would still give the iPhone a try for a couple of reasons. First, and foremost, because your wife wants one. Secondly, since you're already on ATT you can just add it on a family plan and save some money. You also have 30 days to try it and return it if you're not happy with the coverage.

Well if you must go ATT than the iphone is prob an OK decision. I like the iPhone, but like anything apple, you are paying for it. The droid phones are sweet. I have a HTC Hero and love it. You can run multiple apps at the same time being one bonus. Also, with the 2.1 update coming out in the 1st quarter next year, it will run even better. However, the iPhone has WAY WAY WAY more apps the the droids. But that isnt to say that the droid OS wont catch up. Give it a year and I would bet there will be a similar amount of Quality apps for each OS.

Good luck!

I've had two HTC touch screen windows mobile phones, they were pretty good. My wife just came off an HTC phone. At first she liked the HTC phones but less than a year into it and we've burned through two replacement batteries and now the phone has completely died...

My wife and I have Sprint and I have the Palm Pre. I like the phone overall and only have a few complaints about it. There needs to be more apps for the Pre. However, the Sprint service sucks in our area. My wife and I are looking at going w/ the iPhone. Those who have it have not had any issues w/ service in our area. In fact, when the Sprint service is non-existent, the AT&T service is great. I already have the iPod touch and quite a few apps for it. The iPhone is a natural upgrade for us.

I agree w/ what the others say. Decide which will offer the best service and go with them. With the cost of contract cancellations, research and stick w/ something. It's too expensive to bounce back and forth.

Ex iPhone user here, since the launch of the original iPhone. It's one of the best mobile internet devices I've used. That said, it is HORRIBLE as a phone. I've had countless calls not ring in and drop whoever's calling me straight to voicemail even when I have 5 bars service, I've had thousands of failed calls, my experience was overall horrendous whenever I actually had to use it as a phone. It's not just my device, as I've owned the original, the 3G, and the 3Gs. There is a serious problem with either AT&T's network or the iPhone or both... I'm not in a small town either, I'm in an area with perfect coverage.

Just a fair warning. I'm now using an Android based phone and loving it. ;)

I got an android and love it. I even down loaded an app that lets me use my laptop connected to it . Talk about fast. It is almost as fast as my home fios connection. I can even use a web cam . The phone works great as well. I hope someone makes an app that I can teather to my Camera like the iphone can.

I never wanted to buy any iphone but i fiancee loved hers so much even though she has problems with it all the time and i decided i couldnt find another phone that was as user friendly and so many options so i bought it (run on but too lazy to fix). I havent had hardly any problems with mine. Some of my friends have had bad ones as well but others without any at all.
