I saw one for sale last week for $1750 on FM. That's right, $1750. That is a tad more than what 1D2n bodies were selling for a little more than a month ago. Craziness I tell you. The 1D3 is the only other Canon DSLR body that I have used, that isn't full frame, that wowed me with its results.

My take on your shots is that you are getting the hang of the 85 wide open, and that's all a learning process. You then integrate it and choose the best tool for what you're shooting.

Like was said, the 24-70 is a great lens for street photography, it's just solid that way and for most of that kind of shooting f/1.2 is just wider than you need. But in your shots, the only comments I would have is to crop the first one closer, vertical, so your subject stands out and your not distracted from the busy background, and maybe some fill flash on the two indoor scenes with some close work on the subject. I thought the closeup with the three kids was quite nice and shows what you can do with the 85L.

thanks! appreciate the tips. what do you mean by close work?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, 5Ders.

Got to shoot some family with the Sigma 50/1.4 today. This lens had to be sent back to Sigma for calibration, but since then, it's quite sharp at 1.4. Subject isolation at 1/50th is quite a nice thing to have, IMO. My nephew was looking through the images on the back LCD and asked "how come the background's all blurry? That's really cool!".

Then he asked me "how much? I want a camera like that". :)
For all I know, in a month he'll have one.

Well, you can use the 85L for portraits, fill more with the subject and the smooth background will seem more isolated. For real close work, you may not want to go with f/1.2 -- here's a shot at f/2.8 with the 5D:

But if you learn to work with the focus and depth of field, even 1.2 is doable:

^ Yeah, I noticed this when working with my 85 1.8 the other day. The farther back you are from the subject, the more things are in focus, and you have a deeper plane to work with. But when you get real close, if you focus on the eye, the nose and eyebrow even will be bokeh'd creamy smooth :)

Merry Christmas! All this 85mm talk has got me excited, I just picked up an 85 1.8 off eBay yesterday. I can't wait to get my paws on it!

I really like that shot... it's this type of effect that sets the 1.2 apart from the others.
