Thank you to everyone who replied, I have to say I agree with all of them.Yes it is clearly a snapshot.I was trying the wireless trasmitter feature on my 7D firing two speedlites on the subjects in my family room and I was very pleased with the exposure and wanted some feedback on the Image.I never post here in Critique Corner but I must say I really like it Here. I'll have to post here again soon.

I was under the impression this was the place to go when 'practicing' different techniques, not neccessarily posting only wall-hanging products. If we are not allowed to post snaphots for c&c we are all in trouble.

Anyone can post anything in the C&C section. However, whoever responds has the right to tear the image up in respect to C&C. That's the sole intent of this section. I would hope that anyone who posts here would expect the general population to be honest and not give "warm fuzzy" reviews.

I hear what you are saying and agree that honesty is important and is why people post here. But, "tear the image up"? Really? Is the the sole intent of this section? Forgive me if I disagree.

Again, let me repeat I thought this section was to give feedback on specific techniques. It is clear Alan already knows about composition (take a look at his website). After viewing it you will see this image was indeed intended as a snapshot. I just commented that not all snapshots are bad, especially if it is used to critique other aspects of photography. We should be able to post images that are snapshots when we are "practicing", without the negative tone.

I also feel feedback can be given in a constructive manner. For some reason some people feel good by putting others down (aka "tearing the image up") in which they will always find something someting neative to fault (even when it has nothing to do with the purpose of the feedback). I myself, would perfer to critique but not discourage. Afterall, none of us are perfect. Right?

Beyond that, this discussion can go on forever with each side stating their case. This is definitely not the place to do that and we are both getting off the subject.

Alan, I apologize that your posting has come to this. This is not what you intended. I for one will not continue to respond.

I'll agree that "tear the image up" might have not been the best choice of words. However, if someone is merely looking for simple "nice shot" and pats on the back, then that's what the Photo Sharing section is for.

I agree that not all snapshots are bad. Some of my favorite shots of my kids are snapshots. A lot of my biggest sellers to parents are just snapshots because the kids is being genuine.

I'll be the first to admit that I have a lot to learn about photography. However, I have learned more by someone telling me what I did wrong and giving me the chance to fix what I need to change. No one learns anything by always getting the feel good, warm fuzzy critiques. That was, and is, my point. Those who post images here expect to be "evaluated," for lack of a better all-inclusive term.

From the website:

By posting your photos here you are specifically requesting comments, advice and critique of value and merits of both photos and the photographer.

Lighting, Image Quality, picture sharpness.

Alan

Good. Good. Good.

Composition, however...

The foreground clutter, portion of the fire screen are distractions. But what's the subject? What story does this photo tell? The eye is drawn to the snowmen. Are they the subject? If so, I think you need a tighter shot on them.

While it may be an interesting exercise to ask a viewer to focus on one aspect of an image for improving technique and shut the **** up about anything else, you cannot force people to refrain from commenting on other aspects of an image that could use some refinement. It's human nature. I think someone looking to become proficient in all aspects of photography would welcome such comments.

Perhaps you do not understand what a photographer means when he states that an image is a snapshot. It means that there was a lack of attention for some element of the image. In this case, the exposure, lighting, and focus were spot on, but the composition showed little forethought. So the image's overall artistic quality was judged as that of a snapshot by the person who made the comment. Perhaps a little blunt, but there it is.

If you are shooting snowmen, I think it would be better to fill the frame with snowmen.

I cannot agree with the previous posters. Apart from the foreground clutter (table, wire..) the combination of snowmen and the fireplace is an attractive one. It matches the season (at least where most of you guys live :) ) and together make a nice composition.

LOL @ you saying thank you for positive critiques only. Anyone that's not critiquing your composition is doing you a disservice in this case.
