I recently felt as though I have stepped out of the "intermediate" level of photography and am now in the lower end of the "experienced" photographer. With this step, I believe that it is time for an upgrade. I bought the 400D back in August of 08. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my XTi, but reading a few different threads yesterday made me realize how much it's holding me back. I thought that I had settled on the 40D. I looked around on Craigslist hoping someone was looking to get rid of theirs, and I found one not too far away with the EF 28-135 IS USM for just under $1000. BUT I did some further research and started leaning more towards the 50D. Now my question is, which is better bang for buck? The 40D with the additional lens, or the 50D body (possibly a kit)? I know it sounds like a no-brainer, but I figured I'd ask the professionals first. ;)

Go to dpreviews.com and compare the 40d and 50d- not that BIG of a difference.
If you want video as well, compare that with the T1i on the dpreview site.

Canon Xti, 30D + battery grip, T2i GRIPPED, 28mm 2.8, 18-55mm kit, 10-22mm, 28-135mm IS, 24-70mm 2.8 L, 55-250mm IS, 70-200 2.8 L IS, Sigma 150-500mm apo, and two backpacks.

I recommend you to go with a 50D. you might get one with remaining warranty, especially from users upgrading from 50D to 7D.
40D or 50D, you will enjoy the faster AF, extra features, better handling.
I particularly like the custom mode dial, Av/Tv safety shift, bulit in NR option.
Cheers

not bad advice...but...what are you issue do you have with your current body? Lenses are generally a much better investment. the 50d has some slight advantages over a 40d, but you won't see most of those translate directly to better images.

400d --> 50d is the OP's upgrade.

I'm looking at the same thing as well.

op WAS looking at a 40d if you read first post, then the 50d caught his eye. My point is that the difference between the 40d and 50d are minimal, glass is a better investment either way. 40d plus glass is the better route.

I think the 18-55mm is holding you back more than the body. I tried shooting with the 18-55mm II for a week during when my 17-55mm was being serviced and I hated every minute of it. Once I was in a room and spun it to 55mm for a very fast candid shot and the shutter speed suddenly dropped to 1/20 and the shot was blurry as a result. it was very soft at f/4 (family group photo).

My 18-55mm II images don't have that...I guess you would call "pop" to the images, even though I shot RAW and processed it the same as my other photos. USM is godly: I get confirmation beep very fast, it doesn't hunt, and it's more accurate (f/2.8 faster lenses unlock a more precise AF system). When trying to shoot at a rapid clip, the 18-55mm II just dragged me down.

The 17-55mm has done much more to improve my photography than upgrading the body (I use a 20D) would have.

is this the 40D or 50D?
seems expensive for a 40D, i got one on ebay for $600.
i say better go with 40D+ tamron 2.8 or canon 17-55mm rather than 50d.
