High Noon

Ok, being pretty new to all this, and thinking about sticking my toe in the water on some family stuff, kids, seniors (location shoots) I have a question about mid-day sun.

Saw a thread in the people section just now where the photog was only given the option of shooting at high noon. As a result, the faces were full of shadow and the light was REALLY harsh when they weren't shaded.

If a client puts you in the noon-time sun, what kinds of tricks are good to work with that light to avoid shadowed faces & harsh highlights (besides finding shade)?

Fill flash is about the only option if you're in bright mid-day sun. You overexpose a bit and get that "dreamy summer" feel to them...

I'm just starting to play with light, and since I won't have unlimited time to shoot I think I could see this timing happening to me. Trying to have some ideas before being stuck in that situataion.

All you need is a butterfly diffuser. Movies shoot at noon all the time using butterflies and overheads (overheads are really big butterflies).

Just get someone to hold the butterfly between the sun and your subject and like magic you have instant soft light. You can throw in a little off camera flash if it looks too flat to you.

An assistant with a big translucent cloth panel (stretched over a plastic frame) held overhead to soften the light from the sun! Lightform and Photoflex offer the frames and the cloths.
