I have both a 7D and a 5DMKII. I was going to upgrade to the 580EX II flash unit, however, I am concerned that a newer unit may come out that I should wait to buy instead. I currently own both the 430 EX and the 580 EX. Does anyone know the cycle for when new flashes are released by Canon? I thought the 580EXII was newly released over a year ago? Do you think a newer flash compatible with my cameras might be released anytime soon?

You never know until it happens! You can always buy now and sell later, or wait... and wait... and possibly wait a very long time =)

Canon flashes, even the non-current models hold their value well, buy the tool you need. There havent been any rumors on this forum about new flash products in development and usually rumors are rampant here before any new canon announcement,

If you need the flash now just buy it, as others have said you will have no problem selling it used if an upgrade comes out.
