Looks like Rosey probably lost that one ;) He spent a little time playing college hockey here but the goon mentality doesn't go over well with the zebras!

Great thread.

I have a few I'm happy about. I'll post two to keep it simple.

This first one is a wide receiver making a great catch. He broke those tackles and scored a touchdown on this play.

This one is of the top Brazilian surfer, Adrian Sauza. What he's doing is called a backside tailslide. It's meant to look like that.

Sadly my favorite sports photo I've taken this year is of a "zebra".

IMAGE: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3483/3773650093_10020d2763_o.jpg

It was actually pretty interesting, the USPL (now NPPL "National Professional Paintball League" again) has some pretty chaotic sidelines, especially when the event is held in Southern California, we have a 1:3 photographer to player ratio (exaggerated, but not too far from the truth). Everyone was getting virtually the same shot, of the same players, some from the same angles. I was certain that no-matter how good the action got that the shot would be a duplicate of someone else's or just as stale and boring. So out came my trusty peleng 8mm. I saw the ref intently waiting for the action that was about to happen between these two players, got about an inch from behind his head, keeping both players in the frame and "click". 1 shot. This photo really taught me that I NEED to take a look at things from a different perspective if I wanted to be different. It really was a turning point in the way that I shot photo this year.

I'm a hobbyist, but being one notch above a typical GWC I was asked to shoot a youth football game by a friend with a son on the team. I got a ton of great advice from the folks in this forum, so when the "big pass" came I was more or less in the right position to get the shot. He caught the ball, and my friend's team (in purple) went on to win the game.

That's a nice timed catch by the kid and the photographer both...even caught him in mid blink like the rest of us who are shooting more than just once in a while :) I wish there were pylons on the sideline to mark where he was to show that it was a scoring catch, but what can ya do? ;)

SOme great images here. I wish everyone would tell us a little something about the image they have posted. They say pictures are worth a 1000 words, but they don't tell the whole story of why the image is important to the person posting it. Please tell us why you posted it and why it's important to you.

As for me, I have only just this past year got into sports photography. It kind of started for me back in May at the Giro d'Italia in Italy. Big time Bicycle racing of all things. Then Olympic Speed Skating and youth football followed by NFL football and Major League Baseball and now youth Basketball.

With all that in 2009 I have a lot of pretty good images to choose from, but I keep coming back to two images fom the youth football this past Fall. One a mistake of sorts and the other a last ditch effort.

The refs had been getting in front of me all game long and had screwed up several nice shots that I had lined up. In this one, I knew the ref was to my right and I didn't think he'd step into the end zone to make the call, but he did and he stepped right in front of me, again. The camera refocused on his high contrast shirt and I took the frame. At first I didn't think much of it, but it has grown on me. You don't know who scored, you can't see anyone's face, but you know exactly what has just happened and it's good for one team. Let's just say that in this case, good guys wear black!

Sorry for two, but I love this shot as much as the first.
This little kid got to run the football for the first time all season in the last game of the year. This kid isn't the biggest or fastest on the field, but he has the heart of a lion and determination that will make him a winner. And on this one shot I nailed it, focus, eyes and I was in the right spot at the right time. Other than the kids fly area opening up, it was perfect. It made this kids father really happy that I finally got a shot of his kid running the football. He bought a lot of prints from me, after I electroniclly zipped up his pants.
