In the first one are the brushes meant to be in mid air - like thrown at the camera? Only as they are now they look not blurry enough to show motion, and not crisp enough to be still, if you see what I mean. Also, because the painter is in black and the whole scene is dark, I feel he's a bit lost with the brushes creating a further distraction from him. 1DMkIII, 40D, 580EXII, 70-200f 2.8L, 24-70 2.8L, 50mm 1.8 and f2.5 macro, 10-22mm.

I think they're clear enough... But the light sources are confrontational. They should all have the same light source and they need their contrast turned down. Or else it kind of looks like a hack job.
