No doubt Canon got tired of the "it's not sharp" whiners.

Hopefully that's true. A fast tele zoom like this is a bread and butter lens for MANY working pros. It should be without compromise. While the original version of this lens was good, there was certainly room for improvements. Hopefully this lens is a worthy replacement to the original.

The MkI is selling for $1700, there is no way Canon will be stupid enough to charge more than $2199 for the MkII. Nikon 70-200 has always been more expensive so I doubt they will use their same pricing. Plus the Nikon remake of the 70-200 is a huge design change from the previous version, this Canon remake seems like the same thing (just improved glass elements), to me this is a stupid upgrade, I would rather see the 24-70 MkII release. I've owned a lot of glass in the past but the 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 IS are my workhorses and the reason why I switched to Nikon (cause I believe the Nikon counterparts are better ergonomically designed than the Canon ones, plus IQ is about the same, and yes you do pay a hefty price difference).

Nowadays I shoot Nikon, but deep inside I am still a Canon lover... plus Nikonians don't have a cool place to hang like POTN :)

Surely this can't be right:

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is available from the end of February 2010 priced at £2,799.99 / €3,199.99 RRP inc. VAT

£2799!!!!!!!!

I think for that price this f2.8 lens should go to f2.5, at least. Spinal tap anyone? :p

Ahem, 200 2.0, here I come :)

Extra batteries / Rocket blower / Small tripod

Dammit, why didn't they use transparent aluminum instead of glass ?!

Are you waving a flag to find other Trekkies? :p

From that press release, what's new about this lens apart from the optics. I assume they've updated the IS on it as well?

There seems to be better optics, a wider zoom ring, and a reduced MFD. Anything else?
