The celling is too high I think, the bouncing isn't working. What should I try next in diffusing the light? I know there are loads of gadgets but unsure what to try first

TIA

How high is the ceiling? How are you bouncing?

12 feet I think, and I'm usually near the ground at the level of the kids. I've tried every way of tilting it, right now what works is slightly forward kind of above their head. I'm still getting them annoyed with the flash though ;)

Hmmm, I've bounced off that high of a ceiling with success using my 580 EXII. What kind of flash are you using? What are your settings? Are you using a reflector of any kind or shooting with a bare flash head?

12 feet is not that high. I've bounced off a 30-50 ft ceiling before.
use high iso and large aperature. how about FEC? Try setting the FEC to +2/3 to +1

Set your FEC around +1 and your ISO to 800. 12 feet is plenty low enough to bounce.
