OUCH! That was nasty!

I know one of the camera men that shot the show that aired on Animal Planet called "Whale Wars." He lives here in Denver. He said there were days aboard the Steve Irwin that he thought he was going to die. Those Sea Shepard guys are nuts and unfortunatly they trashed a one of a kind boat in their cause.
My friend showed me the footage of the Steve Irwin ramming one of the Japaness whalers before it aired on TV. He thought the Irwin was going to roll over. He also said he'll never step foot onto that boat again while that Capt, is in charge. NUTS!

Is this the vessel that was deliberately rammed by a Japanese whaling vessel in Antarctic waters in recent days? If yes, initial media reports said it had sunk however, that was later upgraded to damaged.

I'm not sure why the Japaness camera op would post that video. Posted on Jan. 5th, 2010. It clearly shows the Japaness ship turning into the path of the smaller boat. It could have turned away. But then again, the smaller boat could have backed off too.
If it didn't sink, I'd be amazed. That's some heavy damage. It won't be doing any 45 knots anytime soon.:rolleyes:

Must not be the same video I saw because you can see the bat boat power up and go forward. I believe if I thought I was going to be rammed, I'd slam it into reverse.

Seems like they were going to try and cut in front of the Japanese ship but under estimated it. Dont think that big of a ship could make a very quick turn, surely didnt see the camera man being thrown off balance by a quick maneuver.

If you put a animals life above that of a humans, I have no sympathy for you.

I was thinking the same thing, although the footage taken from afar (pointing towards the front of the whalers boat) seems to show the whalers make a deliberate sharp turn towards the powerboat.

Currently just a P&S, but watch this space.

I'm all for saving the whales but the SS guys are idiots.

"They rammed us! They tried to kill us!"
Just like you've been doing for years...
"No! They should let us entangle their props with ropes. It's the decent thing to do!"

Mutter mutter mutter...

Salvage failed... Earthrace is now at the bottom of the Southern Ocean. Sad end to a great concept of a boat.

Very sad indeed. Was not overly impressed to hear about that.
Looked very sleek in black too!
