The optics are fine, it's the horrid focusing and build quality that made me sell it and upgrade eventually.
Mine was also super sharp at 1.8, when it hit the focus right.

It is a good lens for a beginner because it is cheap and after they master that lens, they can move onto other things. My daughter will be getting her drivers license here shortly. She won't be getting a fairly expensive nice car, she will get a beater and learn a few things with that first, then she can move up. I's sure that old beater will go the direction she steers the car . The nifty won't Hi

So some user error could have been in play , on my part Hi

Beginners have a hard enough time grasping how to nail focus and position thin DOF without having to deal with a lens that doesn't consistently put the focus where you want. Can you imagine if you left in on auto AF point selection and shot at f1.8? Taylor

But I had to pump my colours up a bit - the "natural" ones always seemed to be a little grey-ish. And yes, every time I screw it on my camera I pray not to see it come apart in my hands. Thor

Like many said, it usually doesn't get sharp until 2.5ish. For real sharp 50 f1.8 lenses, I'd try try Zeiss or Nikkor AIS but no AF though. just my 2 cents.

I need to stay out of the buy/sell forum. It's burning a hole in the wallet...

Who cares if it is $150 instead of 99. I agree. Hi
