I just finished unboxing my new-to-me Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS and so far I love the size and weight of it. :D

The very first thing I noticed as soon as I mounted it and flicked on the IS switch, however, was a noticable whirring noise that I didn't hear on my 18-55mm IS or 55-250mm IS.

Is this normal? I'm guessing the IS assembly needs heftier components in order to move the larger lens elements but I wasn't expecting it to be so loud!

Here's a short video of what I'm talking about: http://vimeo.com/8627691 (external link)

Audio comes from the onboard mic on my T1i so its fairly loud in the video, but my face is right there when I'm using the viewfinder so its pretty accurate.

Video doesn't work but, my 17-55's IS is noticably louder than a 70-300 I used to use. From what I've gathered, it's normal and no cause to be alarmed.

I notice the IS of my 17-55 makes a "zip" noise after I let go of the shutter button and the IS motor stops.

My copy is just slightly louder than my 70-200. I did test one in a store that was "loud". I guess the sound varies a little between each copy.

The 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS units are much quieter than most other IS lenses, almost to the point you don't think they are working. They are most likely not the norm.

Theres nothing wrong with the lens. From my personal experience its IS is louder than the 18-55, 55-250, and 18-200. If you listen closely, it also makes a tick sound just before the IS starts and also after it stops. Enjoy your lens. I'm actually considering buy the 17-55 again.

Wow Vimeo sucks for video hosting! 25 hours for it to convert the file I uploaded :(

Here's the video I was trying to post: http://vimeo.com/8627691 (external link). I've also updated the first post.

Anyway, I have to say the IS works fine, loud or not. AF is fast, and I love the sharpness and DoF at f/2.8 :D

Yeah, the older IS will make this sound. You're okay!

my 17-55 makes the loudest IS noise, followed by the 70-200 IS, and I can barely hear the IS noise from my 24-105

This has piqued my interest because I hear absolutely no noise out of my 17-55 and was wondering if it was even functioning?????? Anyone know how to test this?

My old 17-55 made a very faint humming sound. If you put your ear towards the lens and half press the shutter, you should hear something churning in there.

Yeah, just look through the viewfinder and half press the shutter release to activate the IS. There should be a short pause as it spins up and then the image should noticeably steady. Using the lens at the 55 end will make it a bit more noticeable, but you should have no problem seeing it working.

I think that the 18-55 & 55-250 IS lenses are using a different kind of IS. It is normal to hear the IS in the 17-55 lens.

well i can hear the usm running its just quiet, quieter than my 70-300 usm i might add, I can also see the image jump when the IS activates, so I assume that eveything is working properly. As sharp as this lens is it wold be hard to believe that the IS was not working.

Was just going to post on this. I guess it's normal, but mine is awfully loud, sheesh. I don't have to hold my ear to it to clearly hear it.

With IS, lens makes tiny click followed by 3 to 4 seconds of a noise - almost like a small cassette is being rewound - then another click.

Glad I came hear to read that this is supposedly normal...
