Canon rep told a dealer here in Calgary that it would probably be about $300 to $500 more than the current model. That puts it at about $2400 to $2600 CDN.

That $300-$500 price difference between the mkI and mkII seems low to me (gut feeling). I am thinking that there will be an increase of $800-$1000 CDN for the new lens.

Yeah, this was a surprise, I was checking the Canon site for the dimensions and saw the "New" tag and said "What"? Figures, this would happen when I am thinking about getting the lens (or the 7D ;-)a.

I will bet that Asia will hold the best price tag than any countries in the world their price is gonna be cheaper than UK and US . Why I said that ? I got my 5D2 on the first week that release in Malaysia and paid 300$ cheaper than US price, on top of that it's sold by Canon store in Malaysia.

The original price of the first EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM back in 2001 was 280,000 yen, or USD $3,050.44, not adjuted for inflation. The same lens currently retails for about USD $1,699, some nine years later.

I know we are all hoping for the II version to begin at no higher than $2,200-$2,500, but realistically, there is a very good chance it will be close to $3,000, if not more.

Yeah, it would seem that way, but the pricing doesn't work like that.

Let's take the recent 24 TS-E L lens.

On the Canon Japan website it's ¥250,000
On the Canon U.S.A. website it's $2199.00

However, if you use a currency convertor to convert 250k yen to USD you get: $2,711.00

About $500 USD difference.

I think (hope) it will be about $2250 USD. Though realistically, it will be $2.3-2.4k

SN, you are right. I hadn't thought of such a difference between the different markets. I do sure hope you are right! I'd be happy with ~USD$2,300. :)

Is the price in HK going to be higher for you, you think?

With the yen killing the dollar right now don't expect this thing to be cheap. Sony lost 10% due to currency exchange rates. Canon is going to have to cover there bases and price this puppy high. I'll stick with my MK 1.

It's crazy to think that I picked up my Mark One 2 1/2 years ago for $1,475...

I have had my 70-200 for awhile now and love it. If I can get my funds together, I will consider II because the idea of a lens even sharper than my 70-200 is worth getting. I don't like to pp too much. :) Where have I been, though? I missed the announcement until this morning. Someone get me some Diet Coke before I start today!

That'd make it £1200 less than here. One thousand, 2 hundred pounds.

Unforgivable and blatant profiteering.
