I say go for it. I'm very very happy with mine and don't think I'll be upgrading due to the price.

Ed,

I take your post that
* should wait for some reviews for v.2, and
* should consider 70-200 F/4.0 IS because it's a nice lens too.

if you don't need f2.8 it's the obvious best choice. the only way i would buy the f2.8 IS II is if i needed it, and i don't. i may someday but so far i haven't.

Go for it. That lens has been good enough for all this time. If you look at alot of the long tele lens pics in archives, I can't tell the difference between a 400 2.8 MK1 or MK2. They are all crystal clear.

I just ordered one - could not justify the added expense or wait - the lens is good for what I want

my order has been placed in BH.

F/4.0 IS was considered but I could gain another stop, why not?!

Mine just arrived from Adorama. I'm extremely happy with the images it produces.

Already bought it. UPS delivers tomorrow. While the upgrade is nice in theory, for The Wife's use (wedding photography) the benefits of the mk II don't outweigh the extra cost. So we pulled the trigger on what is arguably already one of Canon's best telephoto zooms.

If, for some reason, we do need to upgrade for the mk II in future years, we'll be able to sell the mk I and get most of our money back. A no-brainer if ever there was one.
