The first one is a Miner Bee, but I'm not sure about the second.

Tech specs: Canon 40D (F13, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (@3x) + a diffused MT-24EX macro twin flash (-2/3 FEC).

Tech specs: Tech specs: Canon 40D (F13, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (@1x) + a diffused MT-24EX macro twin flash (manual mode 1/32 power). Cheap trick: I set the flash to manual mode and the power level so that I could correctly expose the flower. Since that yellow is pretty much the most reflective part of the scene as long as I have the flash set to expose it the subject will be exposed properly as well.

Nice pic, love the first one.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Like #2 - #1 seems a bit dark on the bee although I realise the exposure headache the flower and pollen give.

The joys of shooting a black subject against a yellow flower. Also that first shot suffers from a lack of contrast between the subject and the background. Had the critter been lethargic I would have set something up behind it to reflect the light from the flash and brighten up the background, but the bee was in motion and I just didn't have time.

I recently re-worked my diffuser to make the light a little warmer, but was processing my images like I was still using the old set and I pushed the saturation in post too much. I've re-edited both shots and updated the images in the first post.
