Hey guys,

I'm after people's thoughts on the Canon 200mm f/2.8L lens when combined with a Canon 2x tele-converter. I'm wanting to know if you've found a real drop in AF speed and image quality when the converter is attached, and how much this has affected your ability or happiness with the outcome of the images from the lens.

If anyone has any experiences they'd like to share, positive or negative, or any photos they might like to share, i'd very much appreciate it.

Than you in advance,

Tristan.

It will focus slower, but in good light, the combo will work just fine. For best results, you'll need to shoot at F10 or so, so you see you need a lot of light to get there. No good for fast moving things, like birds, but otherwise it will work for you.

I use the 2X TC II, but feel I need effective f/11 to get reasonable sharpness. I had no issues with AI Servo in 'daylight'.

In case it's useful to you, I've compared the 300mm f/4 (non-IS) with 1.4x TC to the 200mm f/2.8 with 2x TC for motorsports. The 300mm combo was significantly sharper (I only tested in the f/5.6 to f/10 region) and much faster to focus. Not surprising, I guess...

I believe the 200mm f/2.8 prime works better with a TC than the 70-200 f/2.8 zoom, although I've not been able to test them side by side.
