I wonder how he's going to pull this off, myself. Without a tripod, those wedding pictures are going to look awfully strange without a groom.
Get a tripod. Get a flash. Deal with the kit lens.
Hire a pro.

Don't get me wrong but reading the same comment on every 2nd post is bit annoying when I have asked just for a lens advise. And again thank you all for your opinions. That's what it all is! Opinions! ............... you shouldn't get upset, but who am I to say what you should or shouldn't do. You're just not going to get "the typical" wedding shots by doing it yourself, it's a bad idea, that's all whether it annoys you or not, we all have good intentions, don't take it wrong. Canon Stuff

Definitely the 17-55 on a crop body though.

I would not buy a non-L glass lens for $1000 if you put a gun to my head, those that own this lens will probably burn me to the ground for saying this and I know the lens is "almost" as good as an L lens but "almost" just isn't good enough when you spend that kind of money. Definitely the 24-70L, hands down, it will last you a lifetime. Canon Stuff

Look into the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 ($500) or 28-75mm 2.8 ($400), they sell for half the price of the Canon 17-55, you get just as good results and leaves you money for a Flash unit such as the 430XE or the 580XE. As others perhaps already mentioned you can always rent any of these lenses and that way you try before you buy, but I doubt you'll want anything else after renting a 24-70L. Make sure to share some of those pictures with us! Good luck! Yes, I was thinking the same.

More info | For what it's worth I think the 17-55 was the right choice because in my opinion 24mm on a crop is not wide enough. I have made it work with mine but 75% of the pics are at 24mm which makes it obvious that I want more. I plan on ending up with a FF in the near future is how I ended up buying a 24-70. 5DII, 5Dc, 24-70L, 35L, 70-200L IS mkII and some lighting gear
