Hell, I'd be up for a Puffin/Osprey trip to Maine if you guys don't mind me tagging along.

The more the Merrier! Are you limited to weekends?

I almost always do an Osprey weekend, so I'll be going. I'll try to keep an eye on things (weather, tide, etc.) and keep folks up to date.

We have 3 options:
1. Watch the weather, short notice, single-day trip. Been there, done that, no personal interest. But this might work for someone who wants to meet others up there.
2. Plan an advance date. We can get the tide correct, but the weather is a dice-roll. And bad weather can make the entire weekend a total waste.
3. Wing it - check the weather every Wednesday and go when it looks good. This might mean a bad tide, and staying at whatever motel just happens to have rooms. This can be tough since a 3-day weekend is best, since that gives 2 chances at prime shooting at 7:00 AM, and not everyone can get a Friday off at a moment's notice.

If 3 or 4 of us took option 2, we could also rent a boat with a guy we've used in the past, and tour some of the rivers in the area. Eagles, ospreys, seals, and a great blue heron rookery are guaranteed. And we can get close. This shot is full-frame, no cropping, at 400mm:

I am in for Option 2 (or even 3). Just let me know when and where.

I need to post this in an appropriate forum, but thought you folks might be interested as well in case you have not seen it. Very creative solution to light stand bulk and weight!

Nope, I've yet to schedule any of my vacations this year. That and I've plenty of sick and personal days to use up.

Same here. I usually take a week off which allows me to head up there. The weekends can be a little crazy with all the tourists and all.

Also, last year they had a huge festival at the spot, and that seemed to drive off all the ospreys for the following 2 weeks. We may want to plan to go before that Memorial Day weekend, which means any 2-3 days before May 27.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

I will check with Andy to see what the Puffin activity is expected to before Memorial day. If there is reasonable activity, I would attach a Puffin day to the Osprey trip and anyone with the flexibility could join me then.

But, I will go on a weekend as well with anyone without the midweek flexibility.

Time off is even more scarce than weekends :) Before May is good though. But i know that isn't inline with seeing them. Where the hell to Osprey's go during the winter? Florida?

I told you weddings were a nightmare!

Yeah, the Osprey head south. They arrive in Southern RI around Galilee in EARLY May. The problem with RI is there are no restricted feeding spots that you can use that I know of. All you can do is shoot fly byes and nest shots and I only know of one nest where you can get on a bridge and get anywhere near a close shot.

Connecticut has a spot with a people tower level with an active nest where you can get feeding shots!

Raise your rates a bit and either you'll make some extra scratch or free up some time, a win win whichever way it goes.

That's what they call a 'myth'. You eventually price yourself out of the market.
