But the Nifty has been in production for a long time whereas many of those 28-xx lenses were updated every handful of years...

Nearly every EOS body ever sold had one of the lenses I listed included in the box. Cameras like the 1D, 1V or 3 are almost insignificant.

Views of normality at an enthusiast site like POTN are skewed. We think the EF 50/1.8 is really common because so many budding enthusiasts pick one up as a gateway to learning about fast lenses. The reality is that the vast bulk of EOS users have probably never heard of it.

Typical EOS user over the years: Buy a Rebel (film or digital) with a kit lens (one from the list I made above). Maybe add a telezoom like the 75-300 (film) or 55-250 (now). And that is it.

It's worth recognizing that the population here at POTN is the exception, not the norm.

lol my comment was tongue-in-cheek , because of the low value of the 50 f/1.8 . Of course the major bulk of sales would be with the kit lenses , that's common sense ;)

the 18-55 and 18-55 IS sure tells you that canon has sold millions and millions of rebel and xxd series cameras as kit.

True, My point was merely that because the 50mm f/1.8 was in production a LONG time compared to the kit lenses which are updated more frequenlty, that since the introduction of the EOS system the 50mm f/1.8 has probubly sold more than those kit lenses individually..since its been around longer that is

so whats the point of announcing these accomplishments?

they should announce these things whilst announcing a new 24-70L IS ... otherwise . who cares.

its like the seinfeld joke about mcdonalds boasting "1 billion hamburgers sold".... "alright.. uhh i'll buy one"

I agree^^^

What is the point. We really don't care unless they are going to run some kind of promotion to celebrate this accomplishment. Maybe the announcement is to comfort their investors. You know? It's kind of like saying we are a huge company worth lots and lots of money.

Not "kind of like"; it's exactly that.
