Feedback on this idea.

I have 1 72mm and 2 67mm filter sized lenses. I was wondering, could I buy a 72mm filter and get a step-down ring to 67 and only have to have one filter for all three of my lenses?

The only thing about thing about using a step down ring is to be sure you don't vignette.

the step up would be for my 70-200 and my 25-78 so I doubt vignetting would be an issue.

I see. I checked your lenses on your gear list and was thinking it would vignette on your 10-20. :)

I'd buy the 72mm filter specifically for the 10-20. Maybe some vignetting yes but not something I couldn't deal with. Then use a step-up from the 67 thread to 72 and use that filter on the 70-200 and 25-78.

I don't want to buy a slim because I'd lose the ability to attach GND holders and such. I'd get some serious vignetting on the 10-20 if I did that though. lol

Careful on the terminology. What you need is a step-up ring to let you use the larger filter on the smaller lens. A step-down ring will let you use a smaller filter on a larger lens. Make sure that you buy the correct one... ;)

Yeah I realized that after I made that first post and corrected myself in the later one. Thanks though ;)

These are great. To be clear, the 10stop filter you guys are using is the B W 1000x advertised for taking pictures of welding lights and the like? I tried buying a filter at National Camera yesterday and the darkest they had was a 4x 2 stop filter. I don't think I'll get this effect with that, or will I?

I have Hoya 8x 3 stop filter and i am looking to sell it, i have SinghRay Vari-ND which goes up to 8 stops, and i have also B+W 1000x which gives you 10 stop ND, there is Hoya 9 stop ND, you have the choice to go with any, the more stop you get, the longer you can get with certain settings on certain time.

No...to get the "glass effect" on water, you'll need a fairly long exposure. A 2-stop ND will be nowhere enough. To get an idea of the effect, a good CPL will give you about 2-stops of light reduction in addition to the polarizing effect. You can stack an 8-stop with the CPL to get about 10-stops, but you'd need to be mindful of vignetting. The 10-stop is a pretty unique filter...I doubt that many local shops will have one on hand.

I've had a 10 stop for a while, and finally decided to give it a go. Nothing too exciting, but this thread has gone too many pages, with too few pics. :) It certainly is an interesting way to shoot.

First is ISO100, f/16, 159 seconds; Second is ISO200, f/16, 75 seconds.

Thanks guys - These pics are so cool. When I asked the dude at the camera store about 10 stops, he looked at me like I was a unicorn. Makes sense now though. I will order one and return the two stop one I have.

These are great John. I love the perspective in the second image. :)

I may have missed it earlier in the topic, but does someone make a 4x4 (or 100mm) square 9 or 10 stop that could be used in a Cokin Z holder? I don't need glass, as I'm fine with resin thus far.
