Making a HUGE jump to a 7D this week :-)

Hi all,
I know I have not posted much on here, but trust me, I have been reading information daily. I am currently shooting with an S5IS and am moving to a DSLR, While I know the learning curve from a non-dslr to a dslr is huge, and even more so of a jump to a 7D, I am going to make the plunge.

I would rather learn on the camera that I think is going to suit me best then to start on the bottom end, and deal with another learning curve.

I also love the feel of the 7D compared to others. The 50D was a contender for a while, but once I got my hands on the 7D, I knew what I wanted

I know there are those that will say I am crazy, but I prefer to buy a body I like once, then get the glass to grow with it. I am hoping to put up images for everyone to Rip apart as that is my best learning tool

You're not crazy. I bought an XSi, and while it was a nice little camera, I quickly outgrew it, and took a significant loss selling it 8 months later. I think it's best if you can buy once and buy smart, getting a camera you can grow with...if you know it's not something you're going to give up on in a couple months.

Now, since it seems you're on the "buy once" path, skip the 18-55 IS and get the 17-55 f/2.8 IS as your "normal" zoom.

Brett, I am pushing the funds as it is right now for the 7D, so I will need to deal with the kit lens for a bit, and rent additional lenses, however, I will be considering that upgrade in the coming months , And drumsfield, grats on your 7D, isn't the waiting game the worst part? I am going to hunt out my spare batteries and a charger so I can have some pre-charged batteries for the initial play time, then I will sit and RTFM

Saturday is my Daughters last B-ball game, so I will be putting the camera through it's paces, not expecting wonderful results as I will have a bit of learning to do.

I agree with Brett. I started with the XS a year ago and it was fantastic in teaching me one thing - I'm hooked on photography. Wasn't sure whether it would stick so I went cheap. However, a year later I was ready for an upgrade.

In December I made the leap from my trusty and well-loved S5 to the 7D. With the S5 I usually used aperature or shutter priority mode so figured I'd be fine with the 7D. What threw me with the 7D was the AF system. Wow. Big learning curve. A month later and I'm still learning, still practising, still reading, still getting better.

My 7D came with the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens. Also purchased the EF 100-400mm lens at the same time. Noticed a tremendous difference in image quality. Then tried a EF 24-105 f/4 L IS USM lens at the store. Again, tremendous different in IQ. So now own that lens too. Figured the two L lenses will suit me well when/if I move to a full frame body.

Thanks Sue, what do you find about the AF that is tricky? Like I said, I am going to be using the kit lens for a while to get used to it, then will expand the arsenal as the monies, and the wife approve LOL.

Seems you have made your mind already and the 7D is a great choice. I would not worry too much about the learning curve

definitely a good idea to get a body you want.... though people say spend your money on glass, which is 100% right as well.... getting a nice body, assuming you can afford it, is also a good idea as you wont take the hit for upgrading so quickly.

Anyway, in addition to the kit lens, you should take a look at getting a used 50 1.8 for cheap. That will introduce you into the wonderful world of fast prime lenses

Sweet! New toys!!!! I love getting new toys!! Enjoy it, you're going to love shooting with it. I've tried out the 7D and that will be my next body. It seems a perfect fit for what I want to do. The high ISO abilities of that body are truely amazing. Have fun at the Bbal game as well. See if you can get near the baseline (better under the basket area) and shoot the heck out of the game. Set your ISO way up there around 3200 or 6400, set the SS to 1/500th or better and see what happens.

I'm in the same boat, just ordered my 7D from Newegg.com today! Found this site while looking for information in anticipation. I am upgrading from a Rebel XT that I bought in 2005. Taken thousands of photos with it but have found myself wanting more recently.

I upgraded from a 350D as well, there is a lot to learn about the 7D so read the manual a few times, but it is light years ahead.
