just like i told him...

if you are buying a lens based solely on performance the zeiss is a waste of money...its built amazingly obviously, but in lower light conditions i was able to lock down focus manually easier than him, image quality was nearly identical, and I'd even say the Canon had slightly better colors...

basically he is in love with these Zeiss lenses, and he has been comparing the 85/1.4 to the 85/1.8 which is an unfair comparison....i believe Canon's lenses of equal measure are both better...the 50/1.4 is the proper comparison to the zeiss and the 85/1.2 is a better comparison to the zeiss..and we all know which lens is better there..

Cool, thanks for the summary. One last thing, how would you say the Zeiss bokeh compares with the Canon 50/1.4? Some call it dreamy, some call it ugly.. I figure it's a love it or hate it type of quality :)

honestly we took two identically composed shots with 5D2's at the exact same exposure settings and lighting...and the bokeh looked 100% identical...whoever is on either side of that camp is making things up as far as im concerned...the only image difference we could spot was the color difference...and my canon was maybe a very TAD sharper..

That thing looks hollow lol, if it wasn't for the glass reflection.... :) jeez I can picture the light just pouring in. As an interesting side now I heard on the Photofocus podcast that Noink cameras cannot have 1.2 aperture lenses because the mount is too small, do you guys know if this is true?

krb wrote:
Don't know if it's true but it's what I've always heard. A quick look at their catalog shows some nice 1.4 glass but they've never had a 1.2. And an FD-EF adapter doesn't work because the old FD mount is too wide but Nikon to EF adapters work just fine.

They can't have an 85mm f/1.2, but they certainly can (and do) have f/1.2 lenses.

There's the legendary Nokt-Nikkor 58mm f/1.2, the 55 f/1.2 and you can still buy for relatively cheap the 50 f/1.2, which they still sell new:

Wow is that nice. I love the subtle color definition in the sky. Was this f/16 or so? Great composition.

Thank you I appreciate the comment. It was actually shot 1/40 at f18. Typically I would have used a wider angle but wanted to make the colored area of the sky a larger part of the image so I pulled out the 50.

The mandatory "I just got my new lens and the weather is crappy so I´ll stay inside, crank up the aperture and point at a random object"-shot of my cheapo-tripod @ f2:

So far, having taken less than 10 shots with this lens, I must say i like the bokeh (compared to the Carl Zeiss 50mm f1.7 I got rid of for this). It seems sharp enough, too. AF doesn´t hurt either, at least not when coming from the MF Zeiss...

Well, I picked up another Canon 50/1.4, as I never had a chance to try my old one out on full frame. I LOVE my Sigma 50 f/1.4...it's got the most beautiful rendering...but, while the AF is pretty accurate for most stationary stuff, since my daughter has become significantly faster moving, the Sigma's having a hard time keeping up, and I'm getting somewhat inconsistent focusing...so I thought I'd try the Canon again. When I had it first, I really wasn't all that impressed with it. I got inconsistent focus results with it on my 30D, and while it was sharp enough, it wasn't impressive either.

Well, the copy I got yesterday is fantastic. MUCH sharper than my first copy at wide apertures (this one is quite sharp at f/1.4 and VERY sharp at f/1.8). Focus accuracy is excellent. My keepers have gone up significantly, so I'll probably end up keeping this and selling my Sigma. Still, the Sigma has such a special rendering, and MUCH nicer bokeh than the Canon. Why is it so hard to find a perfect 50mm? I have found I can tweak the Canon shots to ALMOST look as nice as the Sigma shots in many instances, but in others it still doesn't quite get there. Still, this Canon is sharper than my Sigma, and is much contrastier at f/1.4 (which is a mixed bag). Happy to get the improvement on AF accuracy for my squirming toddler, but if I do end up selling my Sigma, I will be sad for that too...as the images it makes are magic.

Well, anyway, here's a shot from tonight with my new Canon 50/1.4, @ f/1.8. I have done a little soft focus post processing on it, and added a little vignette.

Ive been very pleased with mine. I had the Sigma too for awhile but returned it because I just didnt see a 500.00 value in it compare to this.
