I loved the focal length when I had a 40D. When I decided to get a 5D it went along with the decision to get the 135L to give me the same perspective. Funny, though. I found I still liked the 85 on the FF, even though I used it somewhat differently so I put off buying the 135. The 5D eventually became a 5DII and I still resisted buying the 135. I finally gave in and have the 135 but I hve no intentions of selling my 85.
I do have more lenses now than I can bring with me when I go out. I shoot very little in the winter. In the fall I will decide what to get rid of since I plan on trimming down my group of lenses.
Spoke to some wedding photogs. A lot of them use a 35L and a 135L and a 70-200 2.8 IS on a 5D FF body. This seems to be the hot setup.
Since I don't do weddings, just First Communions, I figure I go with a "Poor Man's" setup. 7D, 28mm 1.8 = 45mm (can't afford the 24mm L) 85mm 1.8 = 136mm and the trusty 70-200mm 2.8 IS...so I should be in range with the FF setup.
One thing I have now noticed after 10 years as I got more into photography, I have learned that Fast Primes are the only way to go for almost all instances and so is Manual mode on the camera which has now become the only shooting setting on my camera. No AV and TV for me anymore.
I was looking at your Allouette pictures and I am sure the 85mm on a crop would have done a great job. That is exactly the way I see myself using this lens on the street.
Now that i think of it, I kind of like the hood holding on so flimsy...you get knocked around in a croud so that hod would just snap off and break at the worste instead of pulling the lens barrel out of the lens with a normal style hood. Maybe Canon had this in thought, since this lens is ideal for photojournalism on a FF.
Don't sell your 85mm Boh!
