I just tried to buy a 7D on here from username 'Remington'. I sent him the $1,400 via PayPal (Normal, NOT a gift), and he said he would ship that day. He opened a FedEx request for pickup, but that's all he did. He never shipped (according to FedEx) and he won't return emails, calls, or PM's.

I tried to open a dispute with PayPal, but they said he could not be contacted via a normal dispute, so I had to escalate to a claim.

So, am I going to get my money back? Anyone have experience with PayPal and their claims? Is there anything I could have done that would make me lose my chance of getting my money back?

So long as you took the precaution of using your credit card for paypal, you should be fine, you can claim from your credit card company and they will do a chargeback on paypal.

If you paid out of paypal funds or from your bank account you may have a problem. Paypal offers buyer protection, but generally it doesn't cover purchases made outside ebay, because paypal can't verify the transaction details.

Well, I guess that sucks.

Yes, that Remington, he sent me a PM reply to my ad in the wanted section.

I used PayPal funds.

I don't know... my friends say that I should be covered because that's "what PayPal is for"...

In a situation like this, should I make him list it on eBay first? Or just ignore newbies? What should I do?

Not sure what you're saying Boss but I see the OP had a Wanted Ad so it wasn't generated by a For Sale to begin with.

Remington PM's OP directly and offered gear for sale. You can read "Classifieds: Buy" even if you can't post to it. That might chance now.

Now I see where you're coming from...

Yeah, you have to be careful with people just trolling the FS/Wanted sections even if they aren't capable of actually posting.

There was another dude, USArmy something or other, that did the same thing. Answered a bunch of WTB ads and took folks for their money. Last I'd seen of the thread, paypal ended up refunding most of the folks their money. So hold out hope, but put in a claim ASAP

Wouldn't this be considered negative feedback? Just wondering.

Exactly when did you send the payment? Today is Saturday, anything "shipped" today will not show tracking information until late Monday.
