I am no portrait expert, but I find in photos 2-5 there are vertical lines not parallel to the side of the photo which kinda bugs me. The little bit of litter in the lower left corner of photo 5 is also kind of distracting to me.

Thank you! I forgot the vertical lines problem when shooting. Now I don't know what to do. (But maybe some of them are inevitable.) If I rotate the picture in order to make them vertical, the poses of the subject may look weird.

Coming to think about it more, in #4, there is no way to align those vertical/horizontal lines. The perspective itself doesn't allow it. In cases like that, it's impossible to impose such a rule, unless we are ready to claim that all pictures that involve vertical/horizontal pattern must be taken only when the background is exactly symmetrical.

8. I'm not sure if the flare is a good idea.

I like your second set better, the first posts seemed a bit snap shot like. I like the second pic with the tux on. The model will 'pop' more if you keep the backgrounds less distracting and farther in the background, the shutters did nothing for me, and the suit blended into the curtain. Perhaps opening up the lens a bit? I can't read exif, what f stop were you at?

Thank you for your comments! Here is exif for #7:

f/4
1/125 sec.
ISO-400
47mm

(Oh, is there an easy way to copy exif info?)

smuggy tends to strip exif, I am not aware of how to set it so that it doesn't.

These pictures were taken outside of a lecture hall. He came to me after I finished taking pictures for a group of people who asked for headshots and group pictures. So, they are kind of improvised with minimal equipment. He liked the pictures. I realize that there are some shortcomings but I hope to get clearer ideas on how the pictures could have been better, if I were to take similar pictures in places like that again.

Not bad, but I feel there should be some more with eye contact.

Decent shots, altho agree with rgrebby, eye contact is missing in most of them.
