Some local photographer is pairing down his collection. He has a bunch of used lenses lying around, as well as some other stuff. I have been looking some of these up but let me know if I should jump on any and at what price point. He is going to give me better deals the more I buy...

I was writing stuff down very quickly and may have missed some of the required info...

Manual Focus Primes:
Pentax 50mm M SMC 1.7 K mount
Pentax 50mm SMC 1.2
Pentax 50mm 1.4
Minolta MD 50 1.7
Rikenon 50mm f/2

Tamron 19-35mm (seems like this gets decent reviews)
Tamron 28-105

I have been intrigued with manual focus primes for a while and would hope I could use at least one with an adapter. I would want to use them on either my FF or crop body listed below.

The guy sure likes 50 mm primes! I would check out the 1.2 if there is an adapter and go to a review of the lens.

That Tamron 28-105 is f/2.8, I think... the widest range, fast normal zoom available for Canon. Might be worth a look, especially if price is attractive.

I think that Pentax 50 1.7 SMC is regarded as a very decent lens. Not sure of the price. I have Pentax-M 50 SMC 1.4 myself. I was comparing it against the regular Canon 50 1.4, and was awed by how good the Pentax glass was. Not sure if that 1.4 glass is the same as my 1.4 glass.

The Pentax 50/1.4 is a pretty good lens, you'll notice a warmer cast due to the radioactive material in the glass...relax, its miniscule, but yellows over time.

Manual focus lenses are very fun to use, the Pentax MF rings are very smooth (or should be).

I'd be seriously interested in that 1.2 version after a test...haven't seen that one before. Pricewise, not sure either on the 1.2, but a good 1.4 version I'd offer $75.

Turns out he was a russian guy who was hard to understand. I thought he said 1.2 when he said f2.

i ended up buying the whole lot of manual focus 50mm primes. i have heard good things about the 1.4 and 1.7. now i just need to figure out what i need to adapt them to my 5D/40D.

man, this brings back all the times I've seen craigslist posts and, not knowing anything about old primes, frantically ask all over to see if there are any deals, only to find out everything is garbage...5 hrs of research later :(

i dont think they will be better. i really just bought them to play with them. i think i averaged $20/lens. and i know the 50 1.4 is worth $75 alone.
