Heh! That's fine, Lisa as long as you do it reasonably slowly:)!

It's not hard -- did you join Google Maps?

On the map:

Larch Mountain OR, which is near the town of Corbett above the Columbia River, offers a full view of Mount Hood and more.

On the map, but no pictures: Indian Heaven Wilderness, nestled between Mount St, Helens and Mount Adams -- a day hike up into spectalar sceneries and mountain views.

Larch Mountain view of Mount Hood, from the road:

The rewards of a to-the-top hike:

The advantages of a long lens:

And, with a long lens, distant hazy shots of Mount St. Helens, Mount Adams and Mount Jefferson (to the south) -- here's St Helens shot at 340mm:

I forgot to mention that you can also see Mount Rainier from the top of Larch Mountain.

To put the above hazy shot in perspective, here is the scene of the northern view with St. Helens, Rainier, and Mt Adams from the left taken at 28mm with a 5D rather than 340mm:

normally, I wouldn't post a bunch of photos for one location, but this area has several different attractions, far apart, so I'm posting some (pretty lousy:lol:) shots of the area

Opal Creek wilderness area
http://www.opalcreek.org/ (external link)

It's a 3.5 mile hike in & the same back out (no driving) but it's not a terrible hike.

On the way you'll see the opal creek mine (no photos)

the innards of the battleship Oregon (this is just one shot of the many pieces scattered near the old sawmill)

IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v7/p377823009-4.jpg

sawmill falls (and the remains of the old sawmill)
IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v10/p124958441-4.jpg

the mining town of Jawbone Flats and all the remnants of the old mining town
IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v6/p115323205-4.jpg

IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v9/p74041035-4.jpg

IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v9/p180744274-4.jpg

There is much more to see but I didn't want to clutter the thread.

advice: Bring a LIGHT weight camera setup. The 5D and the 24-105 pretty much was all that was necc. It's a long, humid hike so you'll need water and food of some sort to eat at the town before the hike back, is a good idea. Oh and stay on the paths. We got lost in the hills and our GPS couldn't get a signal.

I couldn't find an address so here's the directions, maybe someone can figure out how to put it on the map:

From I-5 exit 253 in Salem, drive on N. Santiam Highway 22 for 23 miles to Mehama's second flashing yellow light. Opposite the Swiss Village restaurant, turn left on Little North Fork Rod for 15 paved miles and an additional 1.3 miles of gravel. (sometimes this road can have very large potholes, if they are doing any logging up there...large ones...it's not always the case but sometimes it's important to have 4wd). At the fork, veer left on Road 2209 past the sign "Road Closed 6 Miles Ahead". Then drive 6 miles to the locked gate. A northwest forest pass is required to park here. The pass cost s $5 per day or $30/season.

This is an attraction well worth seeing if you are up to hiking 7 miles in one day.

Three more points on the map, around Mount St. Helens:

Mount St. Helens has two approaches for a reasonably close view of the crater: a road running north/south on the east side through Gifford Pinchot Forest on the east side of the mountain has a forest road that takes you to the Windy Ridge viewpoint not far from the mountain where, surrounded by the desolation of nearly 30 years ago you get a decent partial view of the crater and the surrounding area to the east.

To the northwest, Highway 504 runs from Castle Rock, on Hwy I-5, to the Johnston Ridge Observatory (and viewpoint and trailhead) about 5 miles from the center of the crater -- farther than Windy Ridge but with a better frontal view.

Both trips are great! Such a lesson in the awesome power of nature!

Here are a few from a Windy Ridge trip:

The approach -- you can occasionally see glimpses of the Mountain in the distance ( haven't done any post-processing on these since the early days in '07:)):

A family was camping in this car in a ravine some miles away when the moutain exploded in a pyrotechnic eruption, and this is all that was left:

Spirit Lake was a beautiflul forested lake near the pristine mountain until the eruption -- it's now pretty much a logjam

It was too late in the day to lug my gear from the parking area up the trail to the view at the top -- next time I'll come earlier and better prepared!

Whew, there's been a lot of markers put down in the last few hours. This was a great idea. I hope some of the other regions can do something similar so we can use their map for traveling.
