And yet it's neither! :p

Jeez, I must have been really tired last night. I was looking first at the 135L thread, then this one. I must have mixed the two up.

I honestly didn't realize the 'lux had that much "pop" for street photography. It's been nothing but snow here for (too many) months. I cannot wait until the weather warms up and people are out and about again. :)

Hello All,

I hope I'm posting this in the appropriate thread. I just received my copy of the Sigma and it seems really soft wide open. I'm not sure if it's a dud or if I'm just expecting too much from a 1.4 lens. Once past 2.8, it seems to sharpen up nicely, but so does my 50 1.8. All testing was done on a tripod using a shutter release, manual focus, and 10x live view magnification. Shot using RAW and no post processing was done. Focus point was on "DK" in Redken.

Sigma 50 1.4 on the left and Canon 50 1.8 MKII on right

1.4:

Hey hey... I'm around, just busy.. and I didn't use the Sigma at all. 16-35 on one, 70-200 on the other... standard setup for PJ, IMO.

If you want to see some killer work by my friend Kris Krug, and some of my own Olympics photography (Colbert and protests/riots, mostly), please see the blog -- http://www.shotinvancouver.com/vancouver/ (external link)

Hello All,

I

I would do a focus test shooting at a focus chart to determine how much front or back focusing the lens has. For sharpness, I would shoot something with higher contrast such as black texts with white background.

Would front/back focus affect this test since I'm using manual focus? Also have I set my standards too high for this lens?

You have an excellent Canon 1.8. I would send the Sigma into service so you're not left wondering. I feel like mine is sharper wide open than yours but I can't be certain since I didn't shoot the same image. Also some of the value of this lens is the intense buttery fall-off of focus, not just the sharpness.

Since you used LV/MF I think your test was valid.

I agree that my copy of the 1.8 is already quite sharp, so it's hard to improve much on it. I will take your advice and send it in since I feel it has slight front focus too. Thanks!

BTW, beautiful hospital shot!
