And I've used this every gymnastics season consistently for the last 15+ years as well as high end fashion / runway shows.

Bought brand spanking new, original cardboard box, original everything and I'm the original owner. Purchased from B&H back in the early to mid 90s. 4,250 dollars plus shipping. I still remember the comments - "oh, the 200 1.8 is such a USELESS lens". This was from a 300 2.8L user. Shot the first gym meet with it and he's the one regretting the light loss in the dim gymnasiums (compared with 200 1.8) . But that was back in the day when I was shooting 400 Fuji and 800 Fuji Press film, EOS 1n and EOS 1nRS bodies. I've shot NUMEROUS times with the 200 2.0L EF IS, but still go back to the 200 1.8 - there's a character to the lens that's highly addictive. If I want to emulate the 2.0 "look", all I have to do is crank the contrast up a bit.

All the 1.8 owners I've written to bought theirs pre-owned and at a higher premium than what you paid for. I hope it'll serve you well for decades to come. Visit my Flickr

I have used the 300/2.8 a bit but mostly with a 1Ds II; with 1.3x it's often too long for what/where I shoot. A 200/2.8 is sort of OK too but does not produce the same images at all, and I need IS. A 200/2 is high on the shopping list for sure, but definitely not right after shelling out for the Mark IV. Maybe next winter. Anders Östberg - Mostly Canon gear - My photos

Now I remember I did try the 200 on the 1D4 and found it too long for basketball unless i wanted to shoot the other side of the court. That's why I still use the 70-200 for basketball. Not in the same league, but does extremely well for this application from kids on up! Hope it's even better on the MkIV! 1D Mk IV, 7D, XTi, 100-400L, 400 f/5.6L, 24-105L, 100mm macro, 1.4x TC, bunch of flashes, RRS BH-55, Manfrotto 055CXPro4 tripod x2

I was thinking of using a 85/1.2L II but was told it was too slow so most use a 85/1.8 Visit my Flickr

Do you guys use this lens without the hood often? Any flair issues? I think it looks less intimidating without the hood so might be able to capture some nice candids at a wedding this weekend. Without the hood it looks stocky like that boyscout from Pixar's 'UP' Visit my Flickr

Now if it was the older 85 mark I, then that's a different story!
