(Apologies if this has been pointed out already but...)

I split my time between the UK and HK. For some reason, the difference in price between the MkI and MkII appears to be smaller in HK than anywhere else at the moment.

As an example, in the UK the MkI retails for GBP1500 while the MkII retails for a whopping GBP2500. In HK, the MkI was going for around HKD13700. The RRP of the MkII is 'only' HKD19000 and I've seen mention of a HKD17000 street price.

I can usually save a couple of hundred quid on a lens in HK, but that's a GBP1100 difference!

Mmm...if I get three, I'll have saved enough to buy a 1D MkIV

You won't be getting any in HK anytime soon. Each shop here got 1 lens and I'd say 90+% of them are gone already. The shops have no idea when they'll be back in stock.

I put my name down for one a day or so after it was announced, the shop I did it in (Kinefoto) hadn't even heard of the announcement when I put the order in. ;)

I don't think it will be $17000 anytime soon either. Maybe in a year it will get to $18000 or so.

85 is gone; replaced with Sigma 50mm (I prefer the focal length, too). The 200 is still for sale, just back from Sun for checkup, it was replaced with the 70-200/mark I. 200mm isn't something I use a lot but for weddings the zoom and IS is helpful. It was also pretty awesome for the Olympics protests/PJ work. If I thought at some point having the additional sharpness from the 200mm prime would benefit me, I would keep it, but that isn't going to happen. I used the zoom with a 1.4x and wide open shooting Colbert and the photos ran on the Huffington Post after being cropped.

oh thats very interesting. I was just briefly looking through your blog today, and i saw some really nice shots that came out when you documented the protest on robson during the olympics. I'd like to ask you as to how you got up the art gallery to take photos of the zipline.

Also, i noticed that you had the sig 50m. i saw your first few photos posted on the sample forum. very nice. I'd like to get a 50L, but i am waiting for an upgrade (though I'm aware that the last one was in 2006) that'll hopefully fix all of the misfocusing issues that the 50L is well known for. Asides, i have other lenses that I am in the hunt for. Preferably the 70-200 II and I am anticipating the release of a 24-70 mark II (Just like everyone else. haha).

i think that the 200 you've posted (on CL and bccamera) is a pretty good price. Too bad i am not really in the market for a 200. In fact, I am selling my 135L for the 70-200 II. Just like you, I really enjoy the flexibility and the IS. Its just that i shoot in the 200mm end more than i'd like and i need it sharp at f2.8 which what this lens offers. I know that the 70-200 mark I is still great, but if i ever upgrade bodies, i'd like a much better futureproof lens that wont be out resolved by the camera.

The $17,000 figure came from Roland Lim's blog (http://rolandlim.wordpress.com/ (external link)).

The Canon Image2 centre in TST had a copy to play with at the weekend. You can also buy stuff from there at the RRP, but I never asked if they had any stock.

TBH I can't see me getting one anytime soon. The 200/2.8 prime suits me better at the moment. Nothing to do with IQ - it just fits in my hand luggage whereas the zoom wouldn't.

new sexy-er hood, there's a black indentation at 135mm, closer minimum focus distance + slightly sharper wide open.

2 questions

1) what is the filter thread size and 2) what is the weight of the lens?

Filter size is still 77mm, the weight is about 3.29lbs (pretty much the same as the original).

I just ordered a Mk1. I can't stand waiting and if I need/want, I can upgrade in a bit.

Stealthy,
Since you seem to be the only one with a copy of the new lens on here, you should start the Lens Sample thread for the 70-200 2.8 IS II. I hope to be able to post my samples also, whenever I end up getting mine.

I would have purchased from Adorama, but they charge me NJ tax, which would be an extra $175. Even though I'm buying online, I am forced to look at lesser retailers. Sucks.

OK OK :p

Here the box. The FOCAL point is about the "and Lens" the softness at the top and bottom is due to the pronounced angle at 200mm and MDF (I did my best, but no tripod is killing me here) of the lens and shallow DOF.

About 4MB

Here is the box shot with the MKI at 200mm and f/2.8. The focus was on the "IS". Never mind the WB. :)

This was shot a few years back on my old 30D. No sharpening was added in post. The MKI is even sharper with my 1D on a per pixel basis versus my old 30D.
