O-kay folks, time to relax.
If you don't like Sigma and won't buy Sigma, please don't bash us over the head with it in a thread about new Sigma lenses....

thanks.

There is no doubt that a minute percentage of Sigma lenses do have issues. A minute percentage of Canon lenses also have issues. There will always be some issues with any mass produced precision item and some will slip through quality control unless manufacturers spend a lot more money on quality control which will drive prices through the roof. Forcing prices through the roof will have consumers squealing like stuck pigs. Manufacturers balance price/quality considerations.

The problem with this thread is that one poster in particular is showing particular ignorance and has already made up their mind before the damned lenses have even been released.

Sigma aren't perfect but they have shown that they will do their level best to rectify issues customers have with their products. Canon aren't perfect either, and neither am I.

Ignorance + Unreasonable Expectations = Idiocy of the highest order. Well done gte357.

Lol!

Don't fret, I intend to seek out proper reviews before making any decisions - not going to prejudge them before they've been released!

I strongly believe the bokeh from the 85 will be as nice as the 50. And actually, 85mm works better for me.. Cant wait :D

Goofin around on the internet, and found a UK store taking pre-orders for the 85/1.4

Ouch... I hope this isn't the street price, but just for the people that can't wait...or better yet, made up!

So, perhaps it will start out in the US for $905.....Ain't that how it usually works? If it's even close to the 50/1.4 it will be a major seller.

Very interesting. That seems to be the first store (external link) to actually post the MSRP for many of these new Sigma lenses. There's a note on each of these lenses indicating that the actual price is yet to be determined. To summarize the MSRP:

  • Sigma 85mm f1.4 = £900
  • Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 OS = £2,000
  • Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS = £700

I am sure those are not going to be real prices. Sigma always like to make their MSRPs the same as the Nikon or Canon brand equivalents, but knows nobody will actually pay that amount.

I truly hope so, $1200 (roundabouts) after conversion is pretty steep, but if it stays sub-$900 range, I think it'll be very popular.

Apparently the new 17-50 DC OS HSM lens lacks full time manual and uses their micro-HSM technology. So this thing has to be significantly cheaper than the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS for me to even entertain making a switch. In fact, without ring HSM and FTM I won't even consider a change. Now if it had ring HSM with FTM, that'd be more interesting to me.

The 85 and 70-200 lenses look real good though.
