from the total cluelessness in his post, it appears as though he has not read his manual. Isnt that the whole reason why there is a manual, to keep from asking questions that are rather in depth to explain, because it already is.

to spoon feed this guy how to capture video form his gl2, to the computer is like a 4 page post. i havent done it because its something that is complex enough for someone that hasnt done it, to read the manual to learn. If at that point he has problems, then he should say, "I tried this and it didnt work, what am i doing wrong"

its like someone asking, How do i take pictures?

1) Is your fire wire card installed? ... and working according to the installation procedures in the manual that came with the card.
2) Is the fire wire cable connected from the card to the GL2?
3) Is the GL2 switched on in the "Play" mode?
4) Is there a tape in the GL2 that already has video shot on it and ready to play?

At this point, either Premiere or Vegas should have no problem recognizing the GL2 and capturing video from it according to it's own capture utility. It will copy the video to your hard drive and save it as a video file for you that you can then use to edit. BTW: Don't run BOTH of these programs at the same time when you want to capture. Only one can safely connect to the camera at a time.

OK FINALLY after weeks of doing nothing I finally bought the wires and chip. I connected the Camcorder to the PC and I have no idea what to do in Vegas Pro or in Premiere. I tried clicking on import and the computer does not recognize the camcorder. Also, if you want to import, do you put the camcorder in Play(VCR) and then tape?

There are several ways you can do this. I'm giving one way, but this does mean there are not other ways. The following is for Premiere Pro

1. Use the LCD screen on the camcorder and rewind to the start of the footage
2. Put it into 'play' or 'VCR' mode
3. Hook it up to the computer with it plugged in and the power on
4. Open Premere Pro and create a DV-NTSC project (picture #1 below): Note I assume here you have a US market camera, not a European market camera.
5. Name the project what you want and click OK
6. In Premiere Pro go File > Capture; this will start a capture dialog box. (picture #2 below)
7. At the top, name the clip something descriptive (e.g. Bracks Birthday) also, put it somewhere on you computer where you can find it later. The reason is these files are pretty big (14 GB / hour)
8. At the bottom right are the buttons to start the tape capture (I don't like scene detect personally)
9. When capturing, the camcorder will play the tape in real time (e.g 5 minutes of footage will take 5 minutes to capture)
10. When done. end the capture.
11. The file will appear in the left upper side of the PP screen; drag and drop it down to the bottom 'timeline' sequence.
12. Here, you will trim, add titles and prepare for export

Export is a whole other thing, it depends on if you want to go to YouTube or make a DVD with Encore.

I followed your simple steps but after I got my Premiere pro , I put my camcorder on Play(VCR) and rewind it back to the start and it still said Capture Device Offline even though on the LCD screen, it says DV in. I tried capturing the footage but I cant press play or any of the buttons

Do you mean the play buttons on the camera? If so, you do not need to press them, because all of this is done over firewire (e.g. the computer can control these basic functions over firewire). If its like my HV20 from Canon, when you begin the capture process in PP, it should begin your tape playing.

I use Adobe OnLocation to record DV video straight to the hard drive. Great software. It came with the Production Pro suite.

The best of luck to you!

I put the camcorder on the Play(VCR) and I see the video on the LCD screen and I press Play. The video is playing on the LCD screen but on Premiere Pro, it says the recording device is not connected and the screen is black.

And YES:
-I connected the camcorder to the Computer WITH the fire wire cable
-The camcorder says DV in
-I followed your steps in Premiere

Is it because I dont have the updated drivers or something? My computer does not recognize the camcorder AT ALL.

On your computer, are you pressing the 'tape' button at the botton of the capture dialog box in Premiere? The camcorder should be in the stopped position.
