There are several ways you can do this. I'm giving one way, but this does mean there are not other ways. The following is for Premiere Pro
1. Use the LCD screen on the camcorder and rewind to the start of the footage
2. Put it into 'play' or 'VCR' mode
3. Hook it up to the computer with it plugged in and the power on
4. Open Premere Pro and create a DV-NTSC project (picture #1 below): Note I assume here you have a US market camera, not a European market camera.
5. Name the project what you want and click OK
6. In Premiere Pro go File > Capture; this will start a capture dialog box. (picture #2 below)
7. At the top, name the clip something descriptive (e.g. Bracks Birthday) also, put it somewhere on you computer where you can find it later. The reason is these files are pretty big (14 GB / hour)
8. At the bottom right are the buttons to start the tape capture (I don't like scene detect personally)
9. When capturing, the camcorder will play the tape in real time (e.g 5 minutes of footage will take 5 minutes to capture)
10. When done. end the capture.
11. The file will appear in the left upper side of the PP screen; drag and drop it down to the bottom 'timeline' sequence.
12. Here, you will trim, add titles and prepare for export
Export is a whole other thing, it depends on if you want to go to YouTube or make a DVD with Encore.
