I have an Acer laptop, 2gb RAM, I plan on getting an external hard drive, will I be able to load in full size RAW files on it without it crashing?
If it won't work can you recomend a setup under 1k for a system and moniter that would suit my needs for portrait editing (no gaming, and I don't plan on doing a ton of video, just random family event stuff).
Thanks!

We need to know what type and model Acer Laptop you have before we can give you a proper answer.

I think it will be okay, slow or very slow. Have you changed O.S. to 7? It might make things faster.

It will work fine. No need for a new laptop. Why do you think it will crash?

I have Vista on it. I will give it a try once the camera gets here and see what happens.

I agree with 711, it shouldn't crash just because using the camera or view the files.

How do you mean "will the 5d crash my laptop?" Do you mean hooking up the camera to the laptop and doing tethered shooting? Do you mean viewing and editing raw files? Or do you mean viewing and/or editing video?

I've got a 5yr old IBM with a 2.0GHz Pentium Mobile w/2GB ram running Vista. While on the slow side, it holds it's own with the 24-26MB 5D MK II files.

The RAW files shouldn't crash it, but it will be very VERY slow at working on them.

Render times for previews will be very slow, as will application of any adjustments or brushes etc.
Expect to make the adjustment, then wait anywhere from half a second to half a minute for it to be applied.
Make sure you have a good book ready when you export them to JPEG as well.

It's a very basic, entry level laptop. It would be fine for working on photos from a very basic entry level camera.
Unfortunately the 5DMK II is not a basic entry level camera and if you want to work efficiently on its RAW files then you really need an equivalent level computer.

Don't listen to them. the 5D II will melt your hard drive, give your dog fleas, and cause your children tol be born naked. Send it to me for safe disposal, and I'll send you a 20D which is 100% compatible with your computer.

I bought a 5d Mark ii and have had a rough time using my desktop for photo processing ever since. Photo uploading takes forever. Photoshop is slower. And so is my raw processor dpp. I have quickly learned that I need a computer that is powerful enough to handle files from such a powerful camera. My computer worked fine with my 20d, but the mark ii is a big step up. Just my 2 cents.

it's not that the camera is powerful, just that the file size is big. lots of bits to process means that things go slower, Toss in that photoshop is a serious memory hog and you even more of a slow does. But tossing memory at the problem does make things go better. If you got 1 gig of memory and are running XP, upgrade to three. If your running Vista64 or Win7-64 toss a lot more memory at it.
