Hello, I am looking for a CHEAP, but decent external hard drive that I can use for extra storage from my laptop. I shoot in RAW and my laptop storage is completely filled up. I am looking for at least 500 gigs. I also use BING so if you know of any BING deals too, please let me know! Right now, I am considering a 500 gb Digital Western My Book or the other My Passport....but the My Book seems to have better reviews....Any ideas from fellow photographers?

After a lot of investigation I bought a LaCie Rugged All-Terrain 500 GB. Very rugged and dependable. And unlike most drives, it requires only a USB port, not a separate power. Check Newegg.

I have tried several and only go with LaCie Rugged. WD's have failed on me several times. LaCie have been falling out of my backpack and still work like new.

My 2 cents.

Mark

^^All drives fail so just buy 2 and deal with it. No company is that much better.

i really like my wd, but sometimes it has a hard time hooking up to my mac after hooking up to my pc (but always does, eventually). past that, no problems, no failures, etc. i also have a non-portable 1 terabyte back-up, though, just in case.

I used WD Passports when I used USB...no issues. Then again, they aren't that cheap. Just make sure you don't go too cheap and get one that uses two USB cables.

You could always get make your own. Get a decent enclosure and a laptop hard drive. It should cost you significantly less so long as you don't use FW or eSATA.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I think I'm gonna go with a 500 GB Western Digital Elements Portable hard drive. Anyone buy this one and if so what do you think?

I have 5 Passports. They have never failed and I have one from 2007 that is still in use.

Thanks for that! I'm picking one up tomorrow. When I'm away from home, I use my laptop to transfer to a hard drive. That one is perfect. Laptop is too old to store very many pictures on, so this will work perfectly.
