Rented it from lensrentals.com. Just got here. For my upcoming Florida trip. Anyway, it is huge and quite heavy.

I will look like a pro with a white lens and the large hood attached. Too bad my skills won't back up the impression. :D

That is all.

I think I am going to rent the F4 for our trip to North Carolina in April. I have a feeling I will be in the same boat LOL.

I was actually quite surprised at how compact and light the f4 version is when I got mine a few weeks ago (f4 IS version). Although, I do shoot with the 24-70L regularly, so my perception of "compact & light" might be quite different than yours.

The 4L is exactly half the weight of the 2.8L IS and a much less imposing looking lens.

The F4 is waaaaay different than the 2.8 Having owned the F4 its long, but its not ridiculously "large" or heavy.

The 2.8 is heavy, and big around. Its wild.

I have the 2.8 and it is a bit heavy. Although, carrying that lens around is about the only exercise I get these days, so I don't mind it.

70-200 mk I bowled me over the first time I picked it up attached to my gripped 5D. Can't wait to slap it on my new (to me) 1DMark II....I need some exercise, maybe I'll jog around the block with it when I get home...lol.

Lugging it around is so worth it, though.

Yes, and yes. Heavy and you'll look like a pro! Enjoy the great images you'll certainly get with the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS. Great lens. It almost never leaves my camera body.

The price difference with used 'L' glass is usually so small that it's not worth it. But there are good deals out there to be had. And I buy most of my gear used and I've never had any issues.

I too like buying everything new. I love being the first to open that lens package and use it. To me its worth the 10-15% ill save to buy new.

Thats an excellent lens btw. And if u dont need the 2.8 the f4 IS is even better. Sharperr and more contrasty give the images a much nicer pop to them. Im actually going for the F4 myself.

I can't get an f4 over an f2.8 after having my 24-70, it would get mad at me.
