There are also a lot of places to d/l free presets to use which come out pretty cool too.

Do you have links to some good sites where you can get the free presets? I'm always leery of DLing stuff (for viruses and what not) so a heads up on good sites is always a plus

It's been a while since I have posted anything, and need to catch up on my PP. I am now *FINALLY* shooting all RAW. I did the transition step from RAW + .jpg (yeah I was taking baby steps), and now I'm 100% RAW.

I need to practice setting my ratings and discards a bit more in LR, as I'm still having a hard time taking a large shoot and narrowing it down to the shots I like.

I hope to post some new ones soon (as I have a backlog of 2500+ shots that need to be PP'ed).

Chris :-)

After two-three years I'm finally being harder on myself and hitting that discard button - taken a while but finally the "only the best" policy is coming through, you wouldn't know it by my submissions though, hehe.

Wow, Steave -- I really like that! You really drew color out of that image, and who was to know that it was there?!

Seriously, I think the ability to bring this kind of quality out of a Raw file is, well, I don't want to get all silly and say something like "magical" but you know what I mean.

Thanks tony, I was really disappointed when I saw that on the LCD screen, definitely glad I shot raw!

Out of curiosity, did your eyes see the purple in the sky, too? I have a few night shots (JPEG; they're from an old P&S) but my eyes saw more or less what the sensors saw. Maybe I should try to dig those up and see if there's any color in the sky...

Just bear in mind that when you look at an initial Raw preview image in Lightroom, it has no saturation or contrast applied to it compared to an out-of-camera jpeg and so it can come across as looking "flat". The colors are there, and with a Raw file you can bring out a pretty rich "wealth" of colors, as you have shown, and this is the power of Raw processing -- bring out the richness of what is in the image.

I originally posted this in the wedding forum but the content seems applicable here....

Here is the unedited raw image....

Using Lightroom I selectively increased the exposure by 1 stop at 50% density on the bride and parts of the dress and then reduced saturation by 50 points at 50% density on the bride's skin. I then applied a preset called "BoonDoggle 2" and completed the edit with some cropping and vignetting to end up with this...

I really like what you've done here. Great processing work! It may not mean much and I don't know how it would turn out, if you just desaturated the entire image and done some selective coloring on the bride, I think it would turn out much better. The color of the car seems to have steered my attention from the bride to the car.

jesuis59, I agree, that's another good example of how Raw files store more color data than is readily evident, and how the right touch with a Raw processor can bring it out. This is something people can really benefit from -- Photoshop can be used to "paint color" into a photo, but when you realize how much can be "massaged" out of a Raw file/processor, you may find less and less need to depend on graphically painting in color in a separate editor.
