They just responded to the wants and desires of the marketplace. If they did not, then someone else would have done the same thing. I know it sounds trite, but the internet changed everything.

Another way too look at this is w/o Getty, would the original poster have sold anything?

$5.00? I bought an image from Getty for my kids' Christmas cards and it set me back $80.00. I wonder how much of that $$$ the photographer got.

Why in the world would they change their market strategy if people are buying their images? It's a smart business move. What do you think the people at getty care about? Photographer's checkbooks? No. Their own checkbooks? Yes.
