If you have already owned a nikon, do you have nikon lenses and flashes already? If so, that makes it easier to stay Nikon.

D90 has better build quality.. thats about all i can think of. Video is no comparison.. T2i is a very capable camera. Had it for 2 days now. Very very nice

How much better of a build quality? Forgoing the video aspect - which camera would you rather have? T2i or the D90? Does the T2i produce great action shots?

No I never purchased any additional Nikon lenses...so I am not partial to Nikon or Canon.

If you really want to know what I would do - I would get a used 30D or 40D and spend the rest on a nice lens or 2 and a speedlight. The body is the least important part and if you aren't going to care about video, no use paying a premium for a new camera.

If you have to rely on others' opinions to make this decision, you are not very experienced. If you are not very experienced, there will be a long learning curve with either camera, and by the time you reach the end of it you will be happy. Both cameras are completely capable of doing anything you will want them to do. Both systems have more than enough to keep you happy for ever.

If you are concerned about your buddies nagging on you, get the D90. If that silly reason for choosing a camera is not your main one, go somewhere you can handle both and get the one you like the most. They will feel very different. That feel will be more difference than you will ever be able to see in the photographs themselves.

It's more important to start taking pictures than to worry about the choice that you think is so difficult.

Get the Canon because Nikon does not have a form as freindly as this is
(and after all it is more fun to be here with a canon )
As for the cameras
I find the Xsi (or any rebel) easier to use (and change setting) than the D90 and i used both - but it is a matter of tast

I was just about to jump the ship when I saw the photos coming straight out of D90 vs my XTi.

However, I read quite a few complaints about reliability of D90 sensor - like hot pixels "developing" over time. I don't have a single hot pixel after 3+ years. Also, the D90 video is fairly limited. The switch would've been too expensive as I would also have to get at least 2 decent lenses and an external flash. Not something I'd want to do having reliability concerns.

So I was then trying to talk myself into buying 50D, but I happened to be one of the very few people who prefer smaller and lighter Rebel series bodies over XXD. And I _really_ like the idea of a full quality video in DSLR.

By all accounts, T2i seems like a winner. I still think, based on my less than educated research, that Nikon has an edge in AF accuracy and auto contrast, at least in cameras I've played with (D300, D40 and D90 vs XTi, XSi and 40D) . However, I am getting better and better at taking decent photos with XTi, and I am sure I will be getting much better photos with an T2i which is supposed to have an upgraded AF. But what really helped me to make up my mind is the capability to take high quality video without need for a second device. I am getting T2i as soon as they are in stock.

If you really want the 7D, buy the T2i now and trade it in later to get the 7D. The lenses/flashes that you get for the T2i will work with the 7D so you will only need to upgrade the body.

Canon in my opinion provides the best value. Nikon and Canon both are very good cameras each with their own strengths and weakness. Look at the long term and you will be replacing the body way before all the lens and other accessories. So start looking close at what glass or other items you may be adding down the road. Then start building that system now versus deciding to switch everything down the road. Have had several friends go down the Olympus path only to both switch to Canon later. This was a costly change.

, ability to swap aperture/ISO quickly without digging through menus, taking wildlife photography, panning/action shots...

Keep learning with your D40 for now. Save for a mid-level Canon or Nikon. I don't care which - used 40D, 50D, D300, 7D.

I'll throw in my two cents and say I think you should go for the T2i. It seems like a very solid camera, and since the D90 has been around for a while it's probably not the best bang for your buck anymore.

It's really up to whatever feels best for you. Go to the store and spend time playing around with the D90 and see how it feels in your hands. You can't go wrong either way. As someone else said, think about which lens system you're more interested in. I know that's hard to do when you're just starting out since everything can be a bit overwhelming, but it is ultimately the lenses that commit you to a camera system. Also, if your family already has a bunch of Nikon stuff that you're able to borrow, that may make the D90 a better choice.

I probably didn't help at all.
