First practice shoot this weekend

And I made a ton of mistakes. We still had full sun at 4:30, I forgot to use fill flash, I forgot to close down my aperture so the pics are soft ... and still, Mom loves them. No charge, of course! She's a friend and agreed to let me practice. I learned a ton from the mistakes I can see, and I bet I'll learn more from the ones you can see.

That being said, here's a sample. These are some post processing plays.

I like 5 a lot. A touch too much sat. on the greens for me, but the bokeh of the trees is really quite stunning. Good work!

My only complaint is with the first pose, the babys face blends in with Mom's arm. At first glance his face looks "distorted" since the skin tones are almost the same. Minor, but it is the first thing that caught my eye.

#2 is too blue...

#3 is great

Personally, I think they're better without fill flash and small aperture. The DOF works well in 5/6.

I like #6. In 5 I think the lil guy's face is way to red.

Nice set. I really like your B&W edits. #6 looks a little muddy on my crappy laptop screen. Maybe try adjusting the curve a little bit?

#2 is way too blue. Generally speaking I like the unedited version better (1, 3 & 5).

I agree with previous posters about baby's face in #1. Perhaps try do some minor dodge and burn on mom's left arm to create more separation between baby's face and mom's arm?

Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I had fun playing with some actions in Photoshop on these and wondered how they looked. I am a TOTAL newbie when it comes to post processing. Great point about mom and baby's arm. I'll see what I can do about that. Thanks all

compare #1 and #2, a warmer feel is always better for family photoshoot IMO. again on #3 and 4.
