I had the same choice last week. Bought the 50d. The extra pixels didn't matter, video didn't matter, additional FPS didn't matter. I would have liked the AF system but not for $500. Not mention, coming from a 40d, I was very comfortable with the handling and mechanics of the 50d. I haven't regretted the decision. Plus, with the savings, I picked up a 50 1.8 and 30 1.4, plus the bonus 28-135 (until sold).

is video that important on a dslr camera?

Yes.

Its not absolutely necessary for the main use of the camera, but neither is a extra battery/grip, light meter, DoF preview or pop-up flash, etc.

I think of it as another avenue of photography that I can explore....and the 7D takes really nice video.

You won't miss it all that much not having it, but you'll certainly appreciate the feature once you have a body that is capable.

Looks similar to my thoughts.
Of course, there is a good reason for the specs to be better each subsequent models. To make you yean for an upgrade to a new model or that technology has improved and continue to let them profit from you (Econs 102 - Jimmy's VW theory).

At the end of the day, it is the photos delivered that is important. Can you make the photos that you intended for ?

The "my camera has more MP than yours (and all the specs diff)" seems kinda of child-like at times that I am feeling & I am on the losing end of it. But I would have a good laugh at this. Especially when I have plenty of cash in the pocket for another piece of EF USM or L glass. How looks the 100mm macro, 50/1.8 and the 70-200 F4 ?

Happy snapping. ^-^

It is only important if you intend to use it I have a 7D and never use it for video so it wouldnt matter to me if it had it or not there are some who say it"s there if you need it I thought that too when I got the 7D 6 months ago and still never use it .I would say if somebody was to be upgrading from a xt and didn"t care about video go for a 40D and save about a $1000 and enjoy a significant upgrade that being said I love my 7D and find myself using my 40D less and less.

Congratulations on the 7D purchase.

For me it all depends on budget, a 50D with top level glass will produce better results than a 7D with kit lens. You see this time and time again on the forum.
If you can afford to buy the best lenses and a 7D body then go for it, otherwise I'd go for a 50D and spend the money saved on some high spec glass.
